Looking for some good public domain reads covering any time during the Colonial period. Books can be rip-roaring fiction or non-fiction. Public domain makes them from the period or early 20th century. These would be books I could download as PDFs, Kindle, or whatnot for free to boot.

Kim is great. You can get a lot of Kipling's stuff for free.

Try searching the word "free" with phrases like "Sudan campaign" or with keywords such as Khartoum and Gordon. I've found a lot of free books for my Nook and iPod Kindle App. Also, look for specific authors: Henty; G.W. Stevens; Bennet Burleigh; a Frank a Power; Charles William; Winston Churchill; William Galloway; Sir Ernest Nathaniel; A.Hilliard Atteridge. My suggestions are more specific to the Sudan but the method can easily and rapidly applied to the Anglo-Zulu War, the Campaigns in India and Afghanistan, Boxer Rebellion, etc.. Many of the works from British Victorian era officers and journalists are in the public domain. Best of luck!
