Hi all

For reasons far too complex to go into here, I have withdrawn from direct involvement with handling the trade bookings at Salute.

Don't worry, however: the programme is at the printers via Miniature Wargames and the show is all rolling forward and on course to be the usual success.

So, as we run up to the show on April 16th, can any further enquiries be directed straight to Bill Tate, the Salute Coordinator, please.

Many thanks in advance for your understanding, and also thankyou to those traders who have contacted me privately to enquire after my wellbeing: I'm fine, thankyou.

Hello all
I am going to be in Atlanta from the 16th to the 20th of March for the International Studies Association, and would like to visit Kennesaw Mountain on Friday morning. Any suggestions on how to get to it from Central Atlanta? How much would a taxi cost to get me there? How much time does it take to explore the main battle site?
Thanks for any suggestions
With Respect

The Bug has struck again! Quick nuke it from orbit!

Follow I 285 West to the I 75 North Exit toward Chattanooga. Kennesaw is an exit on the route. Beware, traffic is a bear!

KTravlos--no nukes! We saw what happened last Friday!

Rental car would be cheaper. IIRC correctly it is about an hour north of Atlanta. Give 45-60 minutes for the visitors center and as much time as you can to walk the path ways. Still had a good feel of the ground when I was there 20 years ago.

Yep … we drove and it was quite a way. Quite a bit of walking too if you take the foot trail – but worth it.

Best part is Pigeon Hill imo, Bit of a climb up from the convenient parking lot (yes-rent a car) at the foot of the hill, but the walk along the ridge is nice.
The lot by Cheatham Hill is also a good place to take a short walk from and see the only real monument and nice trench works and the slope that the Yanks had to ascend. Not a lot to see down by the Kolb farm area.

Great place to visit. If you can manage it, hit Chickamauga (on the GA-TN stateline) and Chattanooga, about 1-1/2 to 2 hours north of Kennesaw (so 2-1/2 to 3 from Atlanta). Also well worth the visit.

I agree, a taxi would be absurdly expensive. Rent a car and plan on an hour drive (3 if you leave at rush hour) Plan on 3 hours at a minimum to give the battlefield justice.

Next time add a day to your visit to Atlanta and drive up to Chickamauga.

Also Cyclorama in Grant Park, if that's not already on your schedule.

As Bill said, traffic is a bear. Try to plan your trip between 9:00 and 2:00 to avoid the rolling hell known as Atlanta rush hour, especially bad on Fridays.

KTravlos15 Mar 2016 9:45 a.m. PST

I have visited Chickamagua, Lookout Mountain, and the Cyclorama (which is now closed for restoration so no chance to show it off to buddies) when I drove up from Statesboro to Chicago.

But did not have time for Kennesaw. I want to rent a car but frankly do not trust the State enough to try it. My Georgia license has expired a year ago, and since I am now an expat I cannot renew it. Not sure I would feel safe to drive on my EU license. Does Georgia tolerate people driving rentals with non-US licenses? I will carry my expired Georgia license with me as well, but still I would like to avoid the hassle.

Trip will probably be 8:00-1:00.

They let us pick ours up at Atlanta airport with UK licenses so I guess it is legal enough (can't see why that would have changed in the few years since our trip) …

I am sure you can rent a car with your EU license. I rent in France all the time with my GA license. I think it works both ways.

I do not know. In Illinois I could not. So it changes by state (as you can guess I am a big fan of the idea of a national drivers license).

Get a copy of Sam Watkins' COMPANY AITCH. Go with it to Cheatham Hill and walk to the Dead Angle. Note the Illinois monument and the plaque where the Union tried to tunnel and blow up the Reds. Look down into the trench. Then read Watkins' chapter on Kennesaw; what he is describing happened RIGHT THERE. There's a couple of good paintings ot thefightiong, too, based on Wartkins description.

Hi all

Thanks for all the advice. I got back to Turkey after the conference, and I am glad to tell you I did the trip. With no car I used public transportation. I took the 10 CCT(Cobb County Transportation) from the MARTA Art Center stop and got off at the CCT Marietta Transportation hub (this was fast and comfortable). From there I took the 40 and got off at Church street, and walked 1.4 miles on Old US 41 to the visitor center. I walked the length of the field from the Visitor Center to the Dead Angle. Photos and videos to go up in my blog.

Made a big mistake in the return trip. Exhausted I decided not to back track (I just could not get myself to go up the Kennsaw's again) but to cut through Marietta in the hope that I would catch a bus. Thus I took Dallas Highway until reaching the first bust stop at the Remembrance Monument (close to Marietta Square) after a 3 mile walk. The 15 from there took me to the Marietta CCT hub and from there I took the 10 back to the Art Center.

Anyway it was worth it and I am glad that the good folk of Marietta invested enough money in public transit that it was doable. Funnily most people I asked had no idea that the public transit system existed, let alone that where its stops at, let alone that one could go to the park using it and a bit of walking. Would had been swell if the 40 made a stop closer to the visitor center (of if they had a small shuttle running from the visitor center to the stop of the 40 on Church street)
