I just tried to upload a picture from my computer to become an icon, since I am a supporting member. I was able to change my JPG picture to GIF, as required. However, it was well over the 3,000 byte size limit (OK, it was about 10,300 bytes),so it wouldn't download. Is there anything I can do to the picture to decrease the number of bytes it uses? I suppose this would make it less sharp, but looking at other pictures on my computer, it looks like almost nothing is under 3,000 bytes.

Photoshop will allow you to resize pics and images.

I suspect other software will as well.

What always perplexes me are the disappearing GIFs.

When I save pics in JPEG format, they work fine. If I try to do the same with GIFs in the same file folder, the save appears to work, but they are invisible, but I can see the JPEGs just fine still.

Finally found a workaround, or saving the GIFs in a separate file, away from the JPEGS, and that works, and I can see them just fine then, but having to do that is annoying.

You can always ask Editor Hebber to compress the file.

Thank you for the offer, Bill. I figured I should try to learn something new first, and was able to add it on my own. Unfortunately, it looks like a multi-color smudge. I assume this reflects the choice of picture on my part, and I guess I need to find a different picture.

Makoo11, thanks very much!

Icons usually work better if you redo them with a very limited colour palette – plain white background, and no blurring between colours. The small size means you want the colours as bold as possible for it to work.
