Hi all. Taking my first stab at a medieval banner. I adapted a template I found online, but there were no instructions on sizing. Does this look right? Seems pretty large to me, I thought I'd check with folks more knowledgable than me. Also, should I remove the metal tip from the lance for the banner? Would these be flown from dedicated 'flag poles' or did they retain a pokey bit on the end?

Yikes!! That is enormous! At a guess I'd say it's about twice as big as it should be. |

The other day, my wife asked me the same question. I was smart enough not to answer it. |

Using supersized flags on the wargames table is fine as long as it does not detract from the visual appeal. It would be OK for the C-in-C to have a bigger flag as well as Divisional Commanders but not every unit. |

All I see is a little black box with a white X in it, here on TMP. Some flags, especially during the Italian Wars, were huge, apparently, significantly dwarfing people, so you have a choice to make them historical in size, and/or to reduce them a bit, so they don't detract from your figures. |

Whoops! Sorry about the missing image. Let's try this again:

Everything is down to personal taste. I would go with half the height and half the width of that. Even that would be oversized for the period of those knights. Going by what I can see of the knights, they may even be early enough that the banner would be narrower than it is tall. See the Manesse codex for proportions. link The flag staff is likely to be the same length as those lances – perhaps even shorter. |

I think taking it down to 2/3rds the current dimensions would look ok Pauls Bods site has pictures like:
..which seem to be 'reasonable' sizes. |

Whoops! Sorry about the missing image. Let's try this again: It wasn't your fault. I can see the image fine in your original post. |

I would also say half the height as it is currently. If you have Kingdom of Heaven on DVD have a look at the banners in that to get an idea of what size can realistically be carried on horseback. |

vis-a-vis the original image: even in a "new tab" all I see is a circle with a fat "minus" sign inside of it. I agree that the flag (in the second posted image) is way too big/fat. But then I have an issue with how big wargaming flags (and figures, for that matter) have steadily gotten as time passes by…. |

vis-a-vis the original image: even in a "new tab" all I see is a circle with a fat "minus" sign inside of it. Now that's odd. Previously I could see the image in the OP, now I just get the "broken image link" icon. |

Thanks for the second pic. I can see that one. I like the size of the ones Herkybird's posted. They look nice. |
