To paraphrase (with credit to Chesty Puller) "They're in front of us, behind us and on our flanks – they can't get away from us now!" |

There was a great bit in Band of Brothers right before Bastogne where this tanker was helping the paratroops gather ammo. The tanker says to Dick Winters, "you guys know you're about to be surrounded, don't you? Winters quips back, " we're paratroopers, son. We're supposed to be surrounded." |

It takes a lot of troops to completely encircle a position. I'm just a flyboy so don't know much about ground tactics, but it seems to me you would want to concentrate your attack at the enemies weakest point and try to break out on that side. |

First it depends on the enemy taking POW and treating them well or not. See Sun Tzu, open door. Maybe drink all the wine cellars not to leave it to them? Really how can one answer such a question, in general? |

If the enemy observes the Geneva Convention, hold out until ammo and food runs low. Then try to break out at night if the troops are able, if not, surrender. If the enemy doesn't, hold out until the last bullet, take as many as you can with you. |

Defilade fire one way. Enfilade then charge the opposite direction. No guts, no glory. |

If you are surrounded? I advocate immediate, abject surrender. If I am surrounded, fight like a cornered weasel. |
