I signed up just after the Kickstarter too. You have to remember that it's a huge project, they are making a single player campaign, as well as the open universe, so its going to take time. Some people are just impatient, others start making elaborate claims against this project for whatever reason, i couldn't care less about that drama though.
CIG has been the most transparrent developer i have seen in years, with constant updates on the status of the project (theres always something to read/watch on a Daily basis) So honestly, I'm not worried about losing my money, like i would be with so many other crowd funded projects which go silent, or only have an update every few months.
With regards to "feature creep" in development, i have to disagree as a lot of the systems are linked. For example you cant have exploration without a jump drive, planets with content to explore, item manipulation etc, which are all separate systems that are in development, which when completed and combined will allow them to release something.
We started out with just being able to walk around our hangars and check out our ships. Then they released the Dogfighting module when the ships were in an actual flyable state, so we could fly around and shoot stuff. Currently we have a space station with a slice of space to explore, as well as the first pass on FPS combat and working multicrew ships. So progress is definitely being made.
By the way, i seriously doubt they're out of money. The Kickstarter was for 5 million USD if i remember correctly. They've since collected over 110 million USD, and thats not even counting the money Chris already had in his pocket, which was enough to create a game. The Kickstarter was good advertisement, and has allowed them to go all out.
