I guess that is an open question? I personally would pick either 1969 or 1970?

Those years were very, very turbulent both socially and politically, to say the least, from Vietnam, to the Manson Family, to Kent State, there was plenty of nasty to go around that could have fueled the kind of conflict Winter of '79 postulates? But I guess that is one way to go?

Any other potential ideas?

I saw the title to your topic, and my first thought was that it ought to be 1969. You've got Black Panthers and similar groups, white supremacists, National Guard, Silent Majority (as a separate militia), groups like the SLA (although they were early 70's), the mob, and maybe even radical hippies who don't believe in peace and love. In college in the U.S., we didn't understand all the issues they were having in the U.K. in the late-70's and early-80's.

I would also go for 1969.

Hmm, Winter of '69? Or perhaps 'Summer of '69 (like the song) and maybe the subtitle is: "The Revolution Will Be Televised".

Yea, best to backdate it a bit, if you want to add in all the radicals at the height of their power.

Things were pretty stable by 1979, with the exception of very high interest rates and fuel prices.

The Dirty Harry flick The Enforcer, though set in '76, would work equally well back-dated to '69-'70. The faux-hippie People's Revolutionary Strike Force (PRSF), black militants, LAW rockets, terrorists disguised as clergy, a female inspector, and Dirty Harry. What's not to love?

I agree with Mako … generally speaking by '79 things had "stabilized" so to speak. Compared to 10 years before. The big "conundrum" was Vietnam of course … in the 60s …

Arms being smuggled from the USSR, through Cuba, and into the US via Florida and the Mexican border.

The corrupt American puppet shah was deposed in Iran in '79, the US embassy in Tehran stormed and hostages taken. Otherwise it was a peaceful year.

Yes, but it was not as bad as the Vietnam War … None the less it was a bad incident that still resounds today … Somewhat like Vietnam …

After the next election?

I would stay away from the 60's. Don't we have enough acrimony and divisiveness today without bringing it to the gaming table?

mwindsorfw26 Feb 2016 5:45 a.m. PST

Maybe Summer of '17? At least I could use my modern armies without buying completely from scratch.

The late 60's is also about the last time it'd be seen as politically viable to send in the army against protesters.

You're not going to see a "bonus army" situation in the present day.

If you want to set it today, you could do plenty of "militia vs the marines" stuff but that only really ends one way and most of those guys aren't actually going to get in a fight.

I'm so glad I was safely tucked away in a jungle in Vietnam in 1969. Very strange times they were?
Getting out of the Marines in late 1970 I immediately let my hair grow long and began to wear plaid along with a big wooden cross as a necklace for about three years??? WIERD!!!

Country is worst off today than back then.

jpattern208 Mar 2016 4:07 p.m. PST

Better in some ways, worse in others.

And I think it will, Kyote. Just some birthing pains along the way.
