I've only just got into wargaming, so I'm pretty sparse in the paint department. Is there a 'starter's' paint kit out there you can recommend? Not sure if it matters but I'm concentrating on Flames of War WW2 firstly. Thanks all. |

Go to the Vallejo website and look at their paint sets. They offer quite a few WWII themed sets that are "nation" specific. Other companies also offer sets, but start with Vallejo. A good USA source for Vallejo is The War Store. |

Vallejo are great paints I also like Tamiya paints – between their greens and browns they cover a lot of colours useful for WWII tanks link |

You are in the UK so try the Coat D'arms paints from Black Hat Miniatures link they do themed paint sets as well as brushes. regards, Paul emperorslibrary.com |

Thanks for the recommendations I see a few people on Youtube are using 'Game Colour' paints. They are also by Vallejo. How many types of paints to they make? |

Vallejo are excellent, and originally Flames of War used them. I'm not sure if the current FoW branded paint are still made by vallejo, but there's a guide on the FoW website that translates their paint range into vallejo's range. If just starting out I'd just buy the Flames range and be done with it. No mucking around, it's what you need straight from the box. |

@Sparky: Vallejo make "Model" which is more for historical colors. "Game" is more of a GW/SciFi range of colors. And "Air" for air brushes. The Coat d'Arms are very good and can be used right out of the bottle. They sell several very nice starter sets that would be good for WW2. blackhat.co.uk |

@Extra Crispy Thank you for the advice Can the Vallejo paints be used straight out of the bottle? |

I read there's a Flames of War to Vallejo paint conversion guide. Is this the one (direct link to pdf): PDF link |

Where's the best place to buy the Vallejo 'Model' paint range in the UK? Thanks all |

Pour a small amount onto a palate (I use cooking sauce jar lids) and wet your brush in a jar of normal tap water and mix together until you get a consistency that works for you. You can use it straight from the bottle but it can be a bit thick depending on the colour. Make sure you shake the bottle well 1st. Some colours are thinner than others – yellow especially. I'd recommend undercoating before painting, I use Halford's grey or white car primer spray. I usually buy mine at shows, but Pendraken are a good supplier. Some model shops stock them and in the north of England Boyes supermarkets also stock them. Prices are pretty consistent, but you often get discounts for multiple purchases from the wargames suppliers. |

By far the best paint I've found so far is Americana. Lovely fine creamy consistency super for fine work -much prefer it to the Vallejos I've tried so far. |

Sparky – as you are in the UK, for Vallejo paints you may want to check out SnM Stuff link They carry (so far as I can tell) the whole range, their service is very good and the prices are good too. They also carry paints by some other manufacturers (eg, Citadel, Lifecolor). |
