More interesting from the Dunland perspective – revenge is a powerful force, and wielded effectively in the game. Rohan is warned. |

Unless you're wedded to the film/GW figures, there are many, many, lines that could do for Dunlanders. I'd go easy on the mail. Tolkien does have pike units behind trenches, defending the approach to Isengard in "The Battles of the Fords of Isen",and my impression at least is that they were men,not orcs,so undoubtedly Dunlanders. Of course pikes would be pretty useless in an assault on Helm's Deep. |

Nice set up!! I use Vikings as Dunlanders -I did think Medieval Prussians/ancient Germans would be good but I've got loads of Viking figures. I always liked the old Minifigs Dunlander but you couldn't field those in this day and age -unless you were playing Dragon Rampant of course!!
You can see where the Prussian/German thing came from… |

I've always viewed the Dunlanders as vaguely Pictish or perhaps Dark Ages Irish, but that's probably influenced by the MERP material on them, so YMMV. I'd agree that their elite warriors probably had chain, but that would be it, and the rest would be unarmored tribal levy with shields. -Will |

Here's Tolkien: "But for all their hatred the Dunlandings were still afraid of the Rohirrim if they met face to face, and they were also less skilled in warfare and less well armed."--Unfinished Tales,p.362. An author's note adds:"They were without body-armour,having only a few hauberks gained by theft or loot. The Rohirrim had the advantage in being supplied by the metal – workers of Gondor. In Isengard as yet only the heavy and clumsy mail of the Orcs was made, by them for their own uses."--p.366,n.11. |

I like the Mithril figures, and it's easy to bulk out the rest of their forces with various Celts. I normally view the Dunlendings as something akin to the Welsh/Picts and the Rohirrm as Saxons. |
