Earlier this month I posted some pictures of conversions of some of the 25mm FPW conversions I had made. I am pleased to say that thanks to fans of the S range who have filled in some of the missing figures from the lists, John Cunningham (CunnJoh@aol.com) is now offering the entire Franco Prussian War S range as recasts.

I have posted the list on our blog abcwargamers.blogspot.co.uk
together with some pictures to help identify the various 'German States' figures.

Just a point of clarification, knowing nothing about the range in question: do you own the rights to the figures? Or were they like Prince August, buy the mold make all you want?

JimDuncanUK19 Feb 2016 9:17 a.m. PST

Using the word 'recasts' raises my eyebrows.

I didn't know the range had been sold.

I'd like to see the ECW 'S' Range back in production.

John has the rights as far as I know. The figures are fine it is just the style which isn't to everyone's liking. No you can't buy moulds, just the figures.

I would avoid using the word "re-cast." That is a synonym for "pirated" in this hobby and gives the impression you / John are selling figures without having the rights to them.

John has had the full rights to them for some time now. He has several of the old Miniature Figurines "S" ranges available.

I think some are being a little precious here. . .

No. They are not.
Recasting without the rights is piracy and theft.

The S Range figures were a bit before my time but I think they are beautiful, characterful figures. Ever since I bought George Gush's 'Renaissance Armies' when I was a kid I've wanted to get hold of some of the S Range Landsknechts because they featured in some of the illustrations.

abc wargamers19 Feb 2016 2:18 p.m. PST

Oh dear, I have caused more of a storm than a surge of delight. These are not pirated or 'iffy' figures.

I thought people might like to celebrate the achievements of the likes of John and Spencer Smith who have gone out of their way to rescue ranges from my youth and save them from oblivion and the other dedicated collectors that have made it possible to bring the range back to life in full.

I am sorry if I have offended anyone. I still love these figures for their charm and simplicity. That is not to say that I will suddenly be binning my 400 or so Perry ACW figures which admire for a different reason, or any of the other hundreds of other figures that I have gathered over the last 40 years.

The phrase recast in this context comes from the toy soldier hobby to reflect that the figures aren't part of the original production run. Same as recast britains – which are more obvious as they are solid instead of hollow cast…

Thanks for that enlightened reply! Obviously if anyone has gone to my first posted link, they'll see it's all on the up and up.

@abc wargamers,
Please continue to post your games here. They exude an "old school" charm.

Which is why I said that some are being a little precious here. . .

What rules are you using for the FPW with your 20mm figures?

I tried to contact and I got a google dead end

I too would be interested in purchasing some of the old 's' range minifigs if available. I've emailed John Cunningham and will come back on if he answers, but the Lone S Ranger's email in UK is no longer valid. Anyone know of a firm contact or web site?
I always liked the old minifigs. Cut my wargaming teeth on them playing with Dick Bryant's bunch in Massachusetts circa late 60's early 70's.

Hi

John is still in business and casting figures. Got my latest batch last week. As well as the FPW range, he has the full original S Range Crimean War listing available as Recast figures. He has also added a number of the conversions that I have done over the past few months so there is now a Mounted British, Scots and another Russian Officer, some Sardinian infantry and cavalry figures made from conversions as well as other British Infantry figures.

His email address for orders is CunnJoh@aol.com

He also sells the Douglas Miniatures range which covers the Crimean War.

There are also some really nice Austrians and Italians see. bobthepainter.blogspot.co.uk for the Bersaglieri more 20mm than 25mm but lovely figures.
