Welcome to the front. It's 1800 miles to Berlin.

* * * * *

Tanks, commando raids, intense infantry action, campaign games and heroes against the odds.

All this and more can be found in Five Men at Kursk, the premier set of second world war skirmish game rules.

Building off the legacy of the FiveCore system, Five Men at Kursk aims at providing a complete, extensive and highly approachable package whether you prefer pick-up games, campaigns or solo gaming.

Give orders, react to your enemy and secure victory using a dice based command system that requires hard choices to be made every turn, and a combat system that lets you establish both damage and morale loss in the same dice throw.

* * * * *

Five Men at Kursk is usable with any individually based figures and covers skirmish battles ranging from a few men on each side up to a platoon, with a squad and a supporting element being the standard.

* * * * *

The content includes:

Complete game rules, packed with options and alternative rules.

Vehicle combat.

Advanced rules covering everything from landmines and civilians to the weather.

Random force creation tables for German, American, Soviet and British forces throughout the war.

A mission generator.

Extensive campaign rules allowing you to follow your own squad, trying to keep your boys alive through intense fighting.

Rules and guidelines for solo players.

Troop ratings for several nationalities, allowing you to portray exactly how a given squad should operate on the table.

The meanest implementation of the fast-playing FiveCore game system yet, including a brand new turn sequence, faster game play than ever, more decisions points and a squad-based troop characteristic table.

* * * * *

For players of the FiveCore system, this volume is dedicated to world war 2, giving you a finely honed game engine, updated to its most modern incarnation yet.

The new mechanics aim at solving many of the more common concerns with the FiveCore engine, such as the erratic turn sequence and lack of troop statistics, while making the game flow better and smoother than ever.

If you are new to the world of FiveCore, this is your ticket to unforgettable campaigns from Arras to Monte Cassino and from Stalingrad to Berlin.

Welcome to Kursk sergeant. The defence of the motherland is now!

Couldn't do it without you.. but I'll deny that if anyone asks.

Ivan:

From the general references I think I know the answer to my question, but just in can I thought I'd ask….

Although your new rules are titled "Five Men at Kursk," do they provide the necessary information to cover all fronts of the war against Germany? If not, what fronts and info do they contain?

Thanks, Dennis

Weasel17 Feb 2016 8:35 p.m. PST

Cheers Dennis – THey do. Detailed support tables and squad generation are given for the big four (US, UK, USSR, German) from 1940 to 45.

Other powers will get added in along the way.

Dennis17 Feb 2016 8:38 p.m. PST

Wow. It took me longer to type the question than it took you to answer it. Your support, as well as your rules (I have some of the others), is impressive.

Dennis

Aw, thanks. I figure I have to make up for the lack of glossy pictures somewhere else ;)

Ivan's done another excellent job with these. At first I was little disappointed that a couple of the hallmarks of Fivecore were missing, but then as I started explore more fully, I saw why this is Five Men At Kursk, and not FMIN 2nd Ed. This isn't a replacement to Fivecore, it's a brand new game, with a number of shared elements, and it creates it's own unique experience.

Everyone needs copies of both immediately :)

War Panda17 Feb 2016 9:14 p.m. PST

Wow…Weasel…I really enjoyed the original but this evolved edition makes very exciting reading.

To my shame I have now three new rule sets that I'm yet to try out: Iron Cross, Combat Patrol and now this…but after reading the first few chapters of this I really think this is going to be tried out first

I know I mentioned this to you already but my only criticism is the title :(

I don't have eastern toys (yet) and the title almost threw me off getting it at all until you explained that it's really generic

I just think it sounds like a Eastern Front version of "5 Men in Normandy" with rules for repairing Panthers and and training anti-tank dogs (that's Chapter IV I believe ;) But this is really not. I think it's a very new and different game

Anyway Ivan, well done with taking a truly innovative system, really evolving it without complicating the #$@ out of it; I hope it's a real success because I think it really deserves to be played

Cheesesailor nails exactly why I wanted to make it a spinoff :-)

It lets me be a bit more risky in doing new stuff, then over time, the best ideas from FiveCore and Kursk will sort of synthesize. That's the plan anyways.

Panda – yeah, I know. I kicked around for a few titles but in the end, since the previous one was Normandy, I figured heading east was fair.
If there's a third one next year, maybe it'll be Five men at Monte Cassino :)

Superb – thank you

vtsaogames18 Feb 2016 5:45 a.m. PST

So… does this mean 5-Core Company Commander and the like may be in for a refit?

Weasel18 Feb 2016 8:08 a.m. PST

Vtsao – I'd like to do that, though I'm not sure of the time frame just yet.

Weasel18 Feb 2016 8:49 a.m. PST

Extended cut, blooper reel and a life-size plushy of myself, wearing a commissars hat will be in the ultra-deluxe boxed set, sold only in Paraguay.

Preorder now for your free decoder ring.

vtsaogames18 Feb 2016 11:43 a.m. PST

Sold only in Paraguay? Will that include 5 Caballeros in the Chaco?

Weasel18 Feb 2016 1:20 p.m. PST

Now I am wondering what the most exotic variant could be. 5 Eskimos in the narwhal graveyard?

btw, courtesy of the insanely talented Gottardo, here's two generators, letting you create a squad and a mission with a mouse click.

Support units and personality traits aren't integrated just yet.

zak965.it/fivemen/mission.html

The mission generator will even tell you the terrain layout, so pretty cool, I might add.

Play around with it a bit. (and before someone blows a fuse, yes, you won't often get the fabled 3 to 1 ratio in these missions. That's intentional. They aren't supposed to be a 100% chance of success for the attacker, especially over the course of a campaign)

ChargeSir18 Feb 2016 1:20 p.m. PST

Excellent, now I am going to have to find something to delete off mY iPad to make room for this.

Looking forward to seeing the new game, plus I bought a whole village of mdf Christmas buildings in the post Christmas sales so guess I will set it in a Small town in Germany.

What size board for 15mm would you suggest?

Shaun Travers18 Feb 2016 1:22 p.m. PST

I am in the same boat as Panda – I bought the rules when they came out yesterday, but also have a backlog of rules to read and play ;-{ I really like the new activation mechanism.

Weasel18 Feb 2016 1:44 p.m. PST

ChargeSir – 3x3 should be fine. The battle ranges are pretty short.
The game is a little bit more mobile than the old version, so that should give you a good amount of space.

If you do just a single squad, don't be afraid to use a small table. 2x2 will play wonderfully intense for that.

Shaun – Glad you like it. I am super pleased with the new action dice. :)

Shaun Travers19 Feb 2016 3:52 a.m. PST

..and so you should be. Next thing you know toy will be selling special 5MAK dice with writing and stuff on them, rather than just pips.

blacksmith21 Feb 2016 7:24 a.m. PST

I have high hopes with this new ruleset and I'm buying it for sure. Regretfully I won't be able to play it until summer. Sigh.

Ps. I suppose there won't be any problem playing Normandy with it?

Weasel21 Feb 2016 11:48 a.m. PST

Not at all, you get tables and stats for the west too.

blacksmith22 Feb 2016 2:38 p.m. PST

Great, thanks!
