Does anyone have a source that states how the ill-fated general was dressed on the field of Salamanca in 1812? The portrait of him as a 7th Light Dragoon is well known but he went back to the 2 Dragoon Guards as he could not afford the social life. He was CO of the latter before he was promoted major general. This suggests that he would have been in red at Salamanca or more likely a blue frock coat. Can anyone illuminate this? |

There's a portrait on his Wikipedia site which shows him in what I assume is the uniform of a Major General of Cavalry (sash knotted on the right hip), but it looks a bit like a print taken from something else, so no idea how accurate it is. And of course there's no accounting for what he may have worn in the field. |

Supercillius, thanks for that. I have had a look and I think I will go with the standard general's uniform or blue frock coat. |

I can tell you that according to an eye witness, he wore a sash as the musket ball that killed him entered his body through it. If I had to depict him, I would put him in a blue frock coat with a crimson sash, white breeches, hessian boots and a cocked hat worn fore and aft. Paul :) |
