Here is my urban setting for 15mm games. Still have to add my Khurasan street lights and GZG containers.

That is absolutely terrific. The signs and bill boards are a great touch. What kind of SF games are you thinking of using this with?

darebear12 Feb 2016 2:00 p.m. PST

Thanks. Color is very important. Creating the signs and posters was the fun part. Some of the billboards are double sided.

Tomorrows War, Gruntz and Alien Squad Leader mainly. Sadly, never really played anything. No one locally is interested in 15mm. But I continue to collect and build anyway.

kallman12 Feb 2016 2:22 p.m. PST

Darebear I understand and feel your pain. I have all this wonderful 15mm Science Fiction and there is zero interest in my area. However seeing your wonderful buildings I am inspired to keep pressing on even if I have to set up solo games. Tomorrow's War is my game of choice for the genre but have been told to give Gruntz a try.

Are the buildings all scratch built?

TK 42112 Feb 2016 2:30 p.m. PST

WOW! Pretty cool s#!t town. The drab gray tones really give it character. I think it's also perfect for pulp gaming.

darebear12 Feb 2016 2:33 p.m. PST

Tomorrow's War is my first choice as well. They are making a new edition which should be interesting. Stargrunt is another favorite of mine. Gruntz is a solid game. Plays like 40K, but easier to learn/manage. It is good for introducing people to 15mm since it plays like 28mm. It was designed from the ground up for 15mm and incorporates all the different model types from manufacturers like GZG, Khurasan, ect.

Alien Squad Leader is another favorite of mine. Very underrated IMO. ASL is what has rekindled some of my interest in 15mm since there are 16 army lists to build from. I really advise checking it out.

Sorry to hear about your situation. I solo game sometimes, but not much.

The apartment buildings are from Old Crow (resin) and the rest are from Mad Mecha Guy (all MDF). The MDF buildings have interior walls and doors too. They are good products and cheap. You need other stuff to go with them though, otherwise they will appear to be uninteresting boxes since they have no real exterior detailing (such as GZG Colony Shacks for example). GZG building fittings work well on them. Then stick a few posters on the side and they look good.

The colors are mainly from Tamiya and some Vallejo Model air. Tamyia Medium Grey is a GREAT urban color, as is their Neutral and Light Grey. Most buildings in our world are greys and earth tones. Painting them was the easy part since they were all airbrushed.

I need to finish my Old Crow civilian vehicles and get them on the parking lot.

Thanks for sharing your pics.

Very impressive.

Looks like a lot of care and no little effort went into the "layout".

Great work, darebear!

Stealth100012 Feb 2016 4:22 p.m. PST

Now that is what I'm talking about. That's an F**ing city. Nice one. :-)

darebear12 Feb 2016 4:34 p.m. PST

Thanks for the kind words gents. Few people see this stuff other than me.

I highly recommend Mad Mecha Guy's stuff. Affordable and quite modular.

Awesome table ! I'm working on the town of shishkabob…..but not nearly finished… This billboards and bar signs are grand

BaldLea12 Feb 2016 5:06 p.m. PST

Fantastic!

Jamesonsafari12 Feb 2016 6:10 p.m. PST

Noo one interested even if you set it up?
Shame.
Thought about solo gaming?

darebear12 Feb 2016 6:15 p.m. PST

Actually, lady luck is with me tonight. Three people coming over on Sunday. Looks like my bait worked.

Actually I have done some solo gaming. However I like the social aspect. There are no local game stores though and honestly I prefer to play at my house. I find wargaming a very personal thing that I prefer do with a close group of people rather than random strangers.

Redroom12 Feb 2016 7:52 p.m. PST

"Zombie – Eat Flesh" – my wife bought be a tshirt of it that was close to the color they used to wear at Subways. I wore it at a Chipotle that was next to a Subways and got strange looks from the employees (they must frown on visiting each others establishments) until someone finally read it and they started cracking up.

Great looking town, awesome stuff.

AVAMANGO13 Feb 2016 8:12 a.m. PST

Very well done that looks amazing, i have a few more buildings to buy before i get to this stage but im getting there, my main issue right now infact for a while now and as pointed out everything is gray and looks very dull. The sigh posts and boards are a great touch and add a needed splash of color,i need to either buy a new printer or get some kind person to print me out some signs and posters…..😆

nazrat13 Feb 2016 8:56 a.m. PST

Fantastic work! I'm really glad you lured some guys into coming over and gaming on it. Let us know how that goes!

darebear13 Feb 2016 9:20 a.m. PST

Thanks all, and thanks to John Treadaway. Your stuff actually inspired me a lot. Your tables and models are what I aspire to myself.

Signs and posters were relatively easy. The internet is filled with this stuff. I just googled "Neon "insert type" signs". Posters are 28mm but simply reduced in size. I printed them out to various sizes and then stuck them on plasticard. Billboards are from Mad Mecha Guy. Any cheap color printer will do the job. Quality is not important because they are so small anyway.

For greys I break up the colors with various airbrushed tones of lighter greys. Window trim helps a lot, as do doors. I didn't do a lot of window trim since I am actually rather lazy at times. MDF takes awhile to paint (at least I found it did) and I just didn't have the patience to deal with all those windows.

For windows BTW I took think Plasticard and painted them NATO black, then cut to size and put them inside the buildings. Otherwise you would see right through them. Building windows are almost always black in our world and it adds contrast to the grey buildings. It is also quite simple to do.

Looks really awesome! I love those buildings from Old Crow and all the other stuff you've done as well (including the MMG!)

Great work.

darebear15 Feb 2016 6:04 a.m. PST

Thanks Harold. It is unfortunate that Old Crow does not have 15mm versions of their 6mm stuff. I have a ton of it for Battletech and if those same buildings came in 15mm I bet they would sell like hotcakes.

That is very sharp looking town.Well laid out and the buildings look sharp.

Thanks for sharing.

darebear16 Feb 2016 7:14 a.m. PST

Thanks Patrick.

For those who were interested, Sunday was a bust. All three of my players were no calls, no shows. Nothing sadder than a gaming table all setup with armies at the ready beside it and no one to share it with. X-Wing and Malifaux are sexier I guess.

John Treadaway16 Feb 2016 11:37 a.m. PST

Darebear: that sucks the big one.

I had a similar event a few years ago where we had a four handed game lined up and one of the guys didn't show. No call, no nuthin'. It also wasn't the first time he'd done it (last of two or three: can't remember).

I called him, he answered:

"Where the Heck* are you?"

"I've got guests" he retorted.

"And you don't jolly well* know how to use a phone, right?" said I.

He never, ever got a another invite.

I can do without mates like that…

No shows and no calls.

Defenestrate them.

Twoball Cane16 Feb 2016 1:24 p.m. PST

That does stink….

It is tough to get people to take the plunge to 15mm. … I wonder if they were pulled by the lure of larger figs…. man I see a city sprawled out like that… smells like napalm in the morning to me…tough to do the same thing in 28mm.

If I lived close to you it would be game-on !

I Belong to a war game club… and hopefully when things are done it'll be a go…..until my kids grow up to fight their old man….

darebear16 Feb 2016 1:54 p.m. PST

Thanks guys. Again, hard to compete with X-Wing, Kings of War and Malifaux.

Here are some photos of the setup and forces for Alien Squad Leader, a large Colonial Defence Force vs. a smaller but better equipped & trained Imperial Army. The Colonials had to defend the central built-up area and the smaller one which was a Ammunition Depot (which the attacker had to destroy; installations in ASL are objectives to be destroyed by the attacker, not captured).

I used to make a lot of hills but now I just use Heroscape terrain. I color matched green paint to my Battletech hex mat (from Hozmat). I then painted them all to match the color of the mat.

Only one or two guys like that at the club I run thankfully but it is definitely ****ing annoying when it does happen.

Beautiful city set-up, darebear!
