does Games Workshop still have licensing rights to epic 40k?

is that why nobody makes them anymore?

Cyrus the Great10 Feb 2016 12:11 p.m. PST

Yes!

15mm and 28mm Fanatik10 Feb 2016 12:35 p.m. PST

Especially now, but they won't be licensing it out since they brought back Specialist Games and plan to relaunch Epic along with a slew of other previous SG titles like Blood Bowl, Battlefleet Gothic, Mordheim, Necromunda, etc.

YES … However, as I oft say, there today is so many good 6mm sci-fi models and rules available now. GW is not required, IMO. Plus intel has it, the re-re-re-re-release of Epic will be Titans only. Imagine what they can charge for one of those new versions ?

Lfseeney10 Feb 2016 3:31 p.m. PST

Saw 2017 for Blood Bowl.

A lot of people see Nessie and Big Foot too. As with GW, I'll believe it when I see it …

Lfseeney10 Feb 2016 7:11 p.m. PST

Suspect one box at 150-175 USD no support.

McWong7310 Feb 2016 8:54 p.m. PST

They own the IP outright, they've never made it under licence.

wminsing11 Feb 2016 8:25 a.m. PST

Yea this question confuses me; Epic 40k IS Games Workshop, they never held it under license.

Posted in the other thread but thought I'd recap for those interested.Take with salt, but it is rumored that when GW re-does Epic the scale will not be 6mm. Read here:

Interesting… funny though because I kind of feel that for the amount of stuff GW wants you to play with on the table, 40k itself should be 15mm.

But this makes sense – GW is a miniatures company and they axed Epic previously because the minis just didn't sell in the volume they wanted. If they can pull off 15mm plastics that are great looking, it will sell for sure.

"funny though because I kind of feel that for the amount of stuff GW wants you to play with on the table, 40k itself should be 15mm."

Considering how many people play 40K style in 15mm, and how Laserburn, which is the ancestral form of the rules was intended for 15mm it's a wonder they ever went larger IMHO Tim. :)

Gah !! Can you imagine the cost of a 15mm scale Titan !!!!! huh?

Tim White12 Feb 2016 5:07 p.m. PST

@Covert Walrus – right on!

@Legion 4 – A lot less than their 28mm Titans!

15mm scale would be fine if they did it. listening GW?

nazrat13 Feb 2016 9:20 a.m. PST

I would certainly jump in on that no matter what the price! 15mm Epic. Beyond incredible!

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa13 Feb 2016 9:40 a.m. PST

It'd never be 15mm (1:100) it have to be 1:95 or 1:130 or some such… Still the idea of spinning 40K Apoc' off as a different scale would make a lot of sense (Space Marine was basically just a modification of Rogue Trader). They'll never do it – too afraid of it leaching sales from 40K proper probably.

Yes, I thought 28mm Titans was just crazy ! You'd need to play in your backyard ! huh?

badger2214 Feb 2016 8:19 a.m. PST

Legeon 4 it has never hit the table but i love my 1 and only 28mm Titan. Not unlike my 28mm Colossal red dragon.

I'm pretty fond of my 16 or so 6mm Imperial Titans too ! evil grin AS well as my 7 or so 6mm Gargants, 7 6mm Eldar Titans and 3 Chaos Titans !

Drusilla199816 Feb 2016 7:37 a.m. PST

We still occasionally play Epic, 2nd edition and have lots of fun! But I have to admit that a 15mm 40K scale would be intriguing as well!

Covert Walrus17 Feb 2016 1:44 p.m. PST

Just realized that this *is* a fair question . . . After all, just because you made something doesn't give you the rights to it automatically these days – Look at Marvel Comics and some of their characters.

nazrat17 Feb 2016 2:20 p.m. PST

But that's actually just because Marvel sold those film rights to other movie companies years and years ago. They still own the characters and the comics. As far as I know GW has never sold ANY of their IP.

Drusilla199818 Feb 2016 3:40 a.m. PST

GW will never sell any of their IP's………… They will also vigorously go after anyone who they feel has stolen anything of theirs, even if not true.

It seems so …

sean6833318 Feb 2016 11:53 a.m. PST

Even if the didn't create it and it isn't their IP… i.e. the term Space Marine.

sumerandakkad21 Feb 2016 7:04 a.m. PST

I can't think of anything less epic than 15mm. Epic is a 6mm game IMHO. The whole ethos was based around ground scale and the size of titans and armies of massed troops that look like armies of millions.
The ONLY reason for rescaling would be sales and profit. Those who like epic will have the old figures already so the market wouldn't be that large.
IF it was in 6mm I would expect new base sizes and such to create sales.

mdauben29 Feb 2016 2:54 p.m. PST

Posted in the other thread but thought I'd recap for those interested. Take with salt, but it is rumored that when GW re-does Epic the scale will not be 6mm.

That would certainly enrage the old school players who already have a collection of 6mm Epic miniatures. On the other hand GW has already shown their indifference at pleasing long standing customers so who knows?

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse29 Feb 2016 5:33 p.m. PST

Based on my starting Epic in '90 … All anyone knows for sure … is GW is still in business. They are predictably unpredictable. The "strong" rumor is it will be a Titan only game.

So IF true, whether they will be 6mm or 10mm. The current existing Titans are closer to 1/500 than 1/300 or 1/285. So 10mm would actually be more in scale with 1/300 or 1/285 … IMO …

shimond00712 Mar 2016 2:23 p.m. PST

I also heard the rumors that the new epic will be 15mm, and they will start with titans, so Imagine titans as big as the current 28mm knights. Yes, the idea it's intriguing but there are several reasons for which I basically don't care much:

- Rules will be horrible most likely.
- Epic Armageddon (last edition published) is currently in very good shape with hardcore players that are keeping it alive. View net-armageddon.org
- I have thousands of miniatures, fortunately I consider the Epic Armageddon rules as the best incarnation of the game, why changing?
- The only risk is that with a reboot of epic GW will most certainty shut down net Epic and the community. So get the rules before they become unavailable!
- If and when another 6mm sci-fi ruleset will surpass the current epic rulset then I will still be able to play with all my 6mm collection.

Don't really need GW, honestly.

I agree … at this point with all the 6mm SF models out there. Plus 4 or 5 versions of Epic … Along with a number of other non-GW rules. GW is not really required. As no one is going to check what rules, models, etc., you use in your game room.

jsans7312 Mar 2016 3:55 p.m. PST

I agree with other posters here, I cant see Gw re-doing Epic in 6mm their are too many excellent proxies out there, they will want it so you HAVE to buy from them, im predicting a new 8mm or 12mm range! Not that im that bothered I have over 26,000pts of epic armies and don't need any of GW's overly expensive minis and going by how various rule systems have gone over the last few years I doubt the rules would even be of interest

SouthernPhantom16 Mar 2016 6:06 p.m. PST

8mm or 12mm? Whoop-de-do, I rescale some of my 6mm stuff in Blender and it sells for a bit more on Shapeways. No big deal.

Mithmee16 Mar 2016 7:48 p.m. PST

Yes I can see GW up sizing EPIC since that will mean all those 6mm mini's can't be used.

That is how GW does business.

But like Shimond007, I have Space Marines, Eldar, Imperial Guard, Orks & Squats in large numbers.

Unlike Shimond007 I do not like EPIC Armageddon.
