Some rules, notably WAB, give nice bonuses to armies or units that have "standards". But what do you use if you have no clue what they used? Vexillum? Solar disc? Dragon head wind sock? Lion head ditto? Back when I did Ancients, I always fell back on the good old head on a pike. In fact, o even bought a pack (small one) of Roman officers once, just so my Gauls had something inspiring to fight under. |

Some type of animal totem is safe for barbarians. |

A spear with coloured pennants when in doubt |

My favourite is the Draco, my most recent one is a bloody tunic and belt on the end of a spear.
Something that seems appropriate even if I'm not sure how historical it is.
How about distinctive umbrella's?

I'd day Twilight Samurai has pretty much covered it. I would only add that, if the army in question didn't have standards, and/or we don't know whether they did, I'm not going to impose one, and certainly won't saddle them with something as revolting as a head on a spike. |

I just whatever standards come in the box, or failing that, some bloke with a ridiculous musical instrument. |
