A war I know next to nothing about. Can anyone recommend any books to start reading Russia fighting Austria Hungary and Germany? Also any recommendations for reading on the Balkans would be gratefully received.

Cheers

Norman Stone wrote 'Russia 1914-1917' or something like that, sorry I own the book but don't have it with me now.

I would suggest the Prit Buttar book Collision of Empires, a more detailed account of the eastern front in 1914.

Yes, agree with Johnp4000, that's a good read too.

Quite specific but Showalters Battle of Tanneberg is excellent for the early clash between the Germans and Russians in 1914.

in Time Portal Passages magazine we did a special issue on the Balkans Wars of 1912-13. Later we did articles as part of a series called the War that would not end. It covered the Trans-caucus and other actions in the area after WW1 into the 1920s.

Another vote for the Pritt Buttar books… there's also 'Germany Ascendant 1915').

The Norman Stone book is a classic. The newer David Stone book 'Russian Army in the great war' is also very good.
