Can anyone point me in the direction of a painting guide for ACW ironclads? I'm also interested in any painting guides covering civil war navies. I am planning on running some games over the coming year at the CSS Neuse museum so I want my ships to look good.

I'm not sure such a thing exists, at least not one that can be counted on. However, here are a couple of sources you can at least point to and say " I got it from this."

Tony Gibbons' Warships and Naval Battles of the Civil War" is out of print and can be kind of spendy, but it does have a lot of color prints. Don't think he's super reliable, but honestly colors are fairly unclear.

Kevin Dougherty's "Ships of the Civil War" is crammed with color plates, in print and available from Amazon in hardcover for $12.95 USD. Reliability is again the same as Gibbons, some schemes likely right on, others are sheer conjecture.

Last, but not least, Osprey has at least six titles in their Vanguard series on ACW naval vessels. Together they aren't cheap, but given the lack of color photography, it might be the best you can do.

This looks like a useful summary to me:

I did two articles in ACWGamer Ezine on the very subject called Ironclads and Riverboats which are available for download at Wargames Vault. I have sent in a third article that focuses on Tinclads and Packets.

Here are some pics I took during my play-tests for my H-Con 2013 game. Not everything was finished at this time (I still had some flags & rigging to do) but folks really seemed to like how they turned out. I just looked at everything I could & made my best guess…

Kevin Dougherty's "Ships of the Civil War" carries an acknowledgement inside the cover that the illustrations are lifted directly from Gibbons. So save some money and get Doughtrty's book for the artwork.

Having said that – some of Gibbon's artwork seems a bit fanciful. But it gives you a place to start.

I'll give a hearty endorsement to ACWBill's painting guides. Very helpfully material!

Another endorsement for ACWBill's articles.
