Well, three leisurely evenings of painting and basing and I'm pretty much ready to go. Thought you might like to see the results. Sorry about the quality of the photos…

The Battlecruisers, escorted by the 2nd Scouting Group's light cruisers and the 5th Torpedo Boat Flotilla.

I based the TBDs two to a base with two bases (one halbflottille) represented by one SDS in GQ2:

And, much as it's an appalling photo, here are the TBDs just to show how tiny they are! Bases were removed prior to mounting:

The basing of the TBDs is especially good. Gives a great sense of movement.

Bases were removed using a sprue cutter I got as part of a Games Workshop painting and basing starter pack, then neatened up with a needle file, but Hinds TMP gives a very comprehensive guide to the best technique:
