Do you disassemble discarded electronics, hoping to find cool bits to use for sci-fi vehicles, buildings, or other hobby purposes? |

yes I have often taken bits home when I was an electrical engineer, lots of useful pieces in them. |

Yes. Printers are great for parts. |
avidgamer | 02 Feb 2016 12:38 p.m. PST |
Yup. I love the fans in PC's. |

I collected a large number of gears and small computer ports over my years as a tech, in hopes of using them, maybe for VSF. Then again, I do mostly historicals and would have a tough time explaining them on an 1863 battlefield. :-) |

Laser triggers from 40 megaton warheads make great line of site tools. |

Absolutely. Before the recent flood of companies producing sci-fi buildings, a modeler had to find things wherever he could. Printer cartridges from all makes, the correction ribbon spools from typewriters, plastic boxes and cylinders, washing machine and radio knobs, as well as plastic pen parts were all pressed into service. "Transistors" (or whatever they are called now) often make interesting barrels or other scenery. My wife would not throw anything plastic away until I checked it out. For buildings I only kept stuff that regular plastic cement would work on. Later I expanded my range to include super glue. |

There was a guy known a Froggy The Great who made a lot of cool stuff that he posted on Terragenesis a few years ago. Forever dismantling stuff like old VCRs and making cool sci-fi stuff. Here's a link to the old Terragenesis site. link |

I used to buy discounted electronics for this expressed purpose. Thrift stores are great for this sort of thing. Especially hiding speaker magnets in the terrain when you are a plastic soldier guy and your opponent welds his own iron bases… |

But, of course! You mean some poor soul hasn't been enlightened yet? BTW, if you haven't figured out how to get those fershlugginer triangle slotted screws out, get a set of cheap mini-screwdrivers, find thr flatheaded one that just fits, and, turning the driver with a pair of pliers or grips, you can lever the screw into, well, unscrewing. |

Fershlugginer? (Or furshlugginer) . A word not seen for many years…I bet you have access to genuine veeblefetzers too. I'm so jealous. |

Duh..as any purist knows, that should have been 'a veeblefetzer repair man'…apologies all round. |
