Hi
I am now drawing (not painting) the Prussian Hussar Regiment Zieten (nr.2) for the battle of Leuthen with papersoldiers, and I (sadly) read that Federich the Great retired in 1743 the Guidons to his Hussar regiments.
Do you know why?
Do you think it is possible that they kept their guidons also in the SYW?

What you can do is use the Hussar regiment that continued to carry captured French colours to goad them – I think they had a full set of Pollerevsky and the odd one from Royale Cravatte.
I fear however that the regiment in question was on the Western front..

@Chokidar,

Thanks, actually I think that in Slesia they didn't have any captured flags

a lot of nations retired light cavalry standards during war time, due to the tasks of light cavalry tactics

It might have something to do with their non-battle role. I seem to remember reading (can't remember where) that Frederick asked that his Hussars should NOT use light coloured horses because they were too easily seen by the enemy when on patrol, scouting, etc. Perhaps he saw guidons in the same way.

..or was too tight to keep on replacing them when they were lost… :-)

He was tight. After visiting a hospital he asked that more appropriate clothes should be supplied – that jackets should be made without a sleeve, breeches a leg, and so on, to save cloth.

The three squadrons of the Black Hussars (HR5)serving in Ferdinand's army in Western Germany carried the captured French cavalry flags.

You should look at the Fanfaro series of paintings of Frederick's Hussars. Many prints on each regiment.

@tricorne
where can I find them?
