I'm fooling around with Team Yankee which is fine for "skirmishes." But if I want a game where NATO can actually fall back more than once, not sure what good options are out there.

  • Looking for the same period as TY so M1, M113 vs T72 and BMP1/2.
  • My table is 18' long. So a rule set where ground scale is something like 1" = 100m would be abut right.
  • Includes TO&E / Scenario / Army List info
  • Rewards real world tactics – ar at least what NATO and WARPAC planned to do in real life

Suggestions?

Fistful of Tows.

CDIV Test of Battle with the modern additions someone has done (the additions are free).

Modern Spearhead.

You might want to give Cold War Commander a look.

Try Sabresquadron. Meant for company level. The free set is still avaible to sample.

Fistful of TOWS is 1" = 100m, and has rules for differentiated between overwatch and "shoot and scoot" that facilitate that kind of action.

I'm just now reading through the rules, so I can't make any claims as to how it actually plays.

Saber squadron is a skirmish style game but easily my favorite rule set for ultra modern.

Fistful of TOWS 3 could be an option for you but at a smaller scale. Have you looked at Modern Spearhead? It is more of an operational level game that allows fallbacks and such. Cold War commander is a good rule set but it is a weird area with how unit removal works.

Even the old CD Combined Arms is a good resource.

TACFORCE has a decent Scenario generator (though you might what to weigh different options).

5Core Brigade Commander works for me, but does not yet have any scenario info (I'm supposed to be working on that)

There is a free rules set called "Threat" out on the web, I use to game with it and we used it to play large sized battles.

While I cut my modern micro armor teeth on Threat – playing with the author Gary Mills & crew @ Ft Riley in the mid 80's – it is a system that pretty much assumes a high level of knowledge regarding modern vehicles et al – & works best with a referee – so not a good 'starter set' – after leaving Kansas, I played lots of Combined Arms (long out of print) – by GDW -it is the modern version of Command Decision – the current version of Command Decision is CDIV Test of Battle – it has some gamer developed modern stuff on the web but no official modern stats etc – It would appear that Cold War Commander and Fistful of TOWs are the most broadly played systems currently – can't recommend Tac Force even if you could find a copy or the WRG modern rules – too clunky

I have Fistful so will look in to it closely.

Cold War Commander always left me cold.

Hey dsfrank, when were you at Riley, I was there 85 to 88 and also gamed with Gary.

Yeah the lack of command and control was one reason I was not real hot on it. Easy enough to bolt something on I guess….guess I'll start there.

Nordic Weasel's Brigade Commander, mentioned above, also fits that bill. A base is a company, with platoon attachments being possible.

raylev329 Jan 2016 4:05 p.m. PST

Definitely Cold War Commander. Easy to pick up, fun to play.

Weasel29 Jan 2016 4:15 p.m. PST

Appreciate it guys :-)

Fistful is basically the game to pick if you're a gearhead, just because of all the weapon profiles.

A vote here for Modern Spearhead. It is however for a higher level game. Ty's FFT3 is also good for a smaller game than Spearhead.

In addition to the ones mentioned above Hoplite Research lulu.com/spotlight/HRGWORLDS has just released a modern expansion titled OPFOR. Scale is 1"=100meters Like 5core Brigade commander each base is a company, but the companies are organized into battalion sized units.

Sudwind29 Jan 2016 9:37 p.m. PST

The old Command Decision Combined Arms rule, or Command Decision Test of Battle with modern charts (I think that data is on thei forum) would work quite well! CD is my favorite set of rules for higher level actions.
