Next month, Japan is going to fly their latest fighter, and they're hoping no one notices. Well, not no one exactly, but as with every stealth fighter, the goal is a visual spectacle and a tiny radar blip. In the works for years, the Mitsubishi Advanced Technology Demonstrator-X, now renamed the X-2, is designed to fit into Japan's modernizing, staunchier military. Did we mention it's stealthy?… link |

Japan's post-WWII aerospace industry is very good. Not only did Mitsubishi license-manufacture F-4's and F-15's, it also indigenously produced the F-1 (loosely based on the Sepecat Jaguar) and F-2 (a redesigned F-16) strike fighters. |

The cost to research and build the new jet is around $322 USD million dollars. We are spending almost $1 USD trillion dollars on the F-35. Something is not right in Kansas. link |

Regardless of budgets, how soon can we see them in 1/600 scale for gaming? |

Not so stealthy since I can see it. |

PaulGenna, You're comparing life time cost of the entire F35 program to the cost of the single prototype for the new X-2. There's nothing wrong in Kansas, just the math you're using. This is just a demonstrator and not even a prototype, which the X35 was. The $322 USD million price is actually pretty good, as the prototype for the X35 was about $375 USD million each. Keep in mind that as a demonstrator, it is NOT the final design. They will need to redesign the aircraft before they go into final production. The F2 is a great plane, but the costs were really bloated and caused a bit of a scandal in Japan. The per unit price ended up being $122 USD million each, which is way more expensive than just buying F16 block 50 or 60 aircraft. (Though they did put a very good AESA radar in the F2). Unfortunately, they didn't build very many (which drove the costs up beyond just the bloat the program took on) and the tsunami wiped out a lot of the F2s on the ground.
This was one of the recoverable ones. |

I'd like one in 1/600th scale as well. |
