Do you have a favorite?

Captain Gideon25 Jan 2016 4:40 p.m. PST

I don't a favorite Aeronef faction as there's too many that I like but I can say that I have which I like more than the others.

Here's are my favorite Aeronef factions:

Japan
United States
Italy
France
Russia

Favorite one? No. But the Latin America ones were cool, especially Argentina and Brazil.

I'm planning on swapping the Austro-Hungarians for the Germans because they look meaner to me, so I guess the AH stuff really rings my bell.

Allen5725 Jan 2016 7:18 p.m. PST

If I stay solely with the models made by Brigade I would say the French followed by the Turks are my favorites. I built a German fleet using primarily modified Houstons Ships for my nefs and Brigade and Wessex Digs. This is really my favorite faction followed by the USA and China also made from modified models other than Brigade models.

British are the best. I built Russians just to have an opponent. The "Great Game" in the air.

David Manley25 Jan 2016 10:28 p.m. PST

Those look more like "countries" than "factions"

Captain Gideon25 Jan 2016 10:46 p.m. PST

David you're right about no factions in Aeronef it's just Nation's whereas in OGRE for example(which I also play)you have the Combine and the Pan-Europeans are just two factions in the OGRE Universe.

It looks like the title of this topic is slightly wrong it should be Favorite Aeronef Nation.

Oh, Look! A nit!

Correct. A Nation is not a Faction.

I think I have a sneaky liking for the Japanese.

Yes, unashamedly a nit. "Faction" is one of the most horrendously misused words in wargaming

Mr. Manley, while I understand you wishing to use it only in the intra-national sense, and maybe stretching it to the inter-national, where no tightly bound empire exists, in a game like Aeronef, where there are nations, empires, AND factions, in which I'd include Fenians, given the choice of constantly saying 'nations, empires, and factions', 'sides', or 'factions', I don't find the last horrendous at all.

Doug

Edit: As for the OP, it seems to be whatever I last was trying to invent myself. They do tend to be legitimate factions, though. ;->=

David Manley28 Jan 2016 12:03 a.m. PST

I like to use the word as it is defined rather than applying it incorrectly to sound "cool"

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP28 Jan 2016 7:58 p.m. PST

Definitions can shift, but kewlness had nothing to do with it. Utility can be a bad task mistress, I agree.

Aesthetically, the Austro-Hungarians are rather Klingon with their rather tapered-dumbbell motif, but I've got a bit of a soft spot for the British floating pre-dreads.

Captain Gideon29 Jan 2016 10:22 a.m. PST

For myself since I'm heavily into Aeronef with over 1,000 ships from 17 different Nations and the Pirates but the only group of ships I don't have are the Scandiavian Union these are ships which I'll never own because they're butt ugly and I see them as Bathtubs with guns this is my own opinion.

The game is simple but I do like the rules although they're not perfect/complete by any means but these are rules that you can add your own house rules to and I have.

Michael

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP30 Jan 2016 6:44 a.m. PST

I always cherish your opinion, but I have fondness for 'butt ugly', and these don't quite qualify. Which makes 'em kind of boring, actually. ;->=

Am a bit intrigued by the 'HMS Nelson' feel of the mid-range.

As for the rules, perfect example of how I always feel I can cobble more to my taste. However, I quite recommend Mr. Manley's extensions for altitude and adding surface sea units.

Stuff that screams at me 'oh, yeah? can you do better?', which I strongly doubt. He has my extreme admiration.

Doug

Speaking of Mr Manley's extensions, does anyone know where I can find those?

Captain Gideon01 Feb 2016 11:32 a.m. PST

There is one faction in Aeronef and it's the Pirates.

My small Pirate Fleet consists of several of the standard Pirate ships which Brigade Games makes but I also have some ex-German,French and Russian ships as well.

So you can say that there's one faction in Aeronef.

Sadowa1866: I've put the links up before, which point to archive.org, as Mr. Manley's web site is only a memory there.

Takes of a bit of search to find. I might give it a go again later.

Something else to add I'll be running an Aeronef game at a local gaming convention in San Ramon CA Feb 13th.

The Convention is called Dundracon and my game will have Italian's vs Turks.

Mr. Manley's Warlord of the Skies – Expanded Rules for Aeronef are in issue 46 of Ragnorak, available on Wargames Vault.

Thanks, Grover! I didn't realize the Ragnorak's went back that far there.

As a member, I should be supporting the club, eh?
