Not sure whether this is the right place to post this but wanted to ask a question of the community and get feedback from both customers and retailers.

Recently, I've been looking for an X-Wing item that is out of stock basically everywhere for an upcoming tournie. I sent an enquiry to my FLGS asking if they had it and they didn't but said they could order it and have it before the weekend. Great.

So I waited and didn't hear back…

I PMed them on Thursday if they had it and they responded they hadn't received their order. No further info.

Friday comes and still no update…so I PMed again. No response.

It's now Saturday and I've yet to hear back from them and the tournie is coming up soon. I checked another local store and they do have it in stock, so I'm extremely tempted to by from this other shop. Now, I don't mean to sound rude and I'm not looking to do this to upset my FLGS, but I feel like they've dropped the ball here and I'm in need of this item for a tournie.

What do?

Which is more important, keeping the store open or getting this piece?

Things might have been busy Friday, and calling and talking are generally more effective than a Text or PM

I had a local "f"lgs lose two of my ordered items, never got another dime from me.

Why don't you pick up the phone and call them?

Forget them and buy from the other store. I used to own a flgs and my business partner used to lie and string people along all the time with 'I ordered it' 'it's coming' . Big part of why I closed the store.

Why don't you GO there? They are a FLocalGS aren't they?

So, the item is pretty much out of stock everywhere you have looked. But your local store is trying to get it for you but not achieving that within a single week? Could it be that the item is out if stock with the distributor (explaining why it is out if stock everywhere else) and your expectations are simply unrealistic? The local store may well not have been told this and are consequently just going through their usual order process.

Picking up the phone would seem to be a simple solution. Or visiting the store if they are local. However, expecting a store to magically stock an item which nobody else can get hold of does seem rather like a case if over-expectation on your part.

Speaking as an ex-retailer, this is what you do….

Go to the second store that has the item in stock and buy it. Then go to the original store, explain that you would like to cancel your order. Apologise for the inconvenience and explain that you need the item ASAP and you have found one elsewhere. Doing this will ensure you get the item you want while behaving fairly with the retailer. Your conscience will be clear.

Their response should be 'no problem sir, thanks for letting us know'. If they react badly their customer service is rubbish and you will know to avoid them in future!

Yep, Cerdic has it right!

Kids today and their devices.
In my day, I would use the telephone or just drive over.

back in my day the string between the tin cans didn't stretch that far and I had to saddle up the horse and saunter over there.

Cerdic has it correct. It is the job of the retailer to provide you with product you want to buy. If they don't have it and can't get it in accordance with your timetable, you have a right to buy it elsewhere, but you also have an obligation to cancel your order in a timely manner.
