There are a lot of ways to play Age of Sigmar (which is sort of the point). I went the narrative/story-based route which may be unfamiliar to 'core' Warhammer players (though I am sure the historical crowd is quietly guffawing at this point!).

Anyway, I penned a few thoughts on how to approach AoS from this angle, if that would be of interest:

Call me old-fashioned, but still I yearn for the Old World.

Great introduction. I'm going to post it to r/ageofsigmar for people to read up on there when someone has a question or is new to the game.

Awesome Matt love the intro. Age of Sigmar is the most fun I've had wargaming in a long time. No stress involved just put figs on the table and play. Wish they would make 40k the same way.

Nice to seem something positive, actually encouraging people to play a game, rather than the in vogue through vitriol at GW. I've bought some of the Age of Sigmar kits: they were a blast to put together, really fantastic kits that look great, IF you like the aesthetic. Where they expensive? Yes, but worth it in my experience: I have purchased figures from a variety of manufactures, many of whom are lauded over here on TMP, only to find figures which were miscast, fit poorly, or required hours of cleanup to make ready. I even played the game; it was fun, for what it is – simple large skirmish battle rules that allow synergies between troop types.

The latest release of Fyreslayers are not really my cup of tea…. though I've been wondering…. how would they look if I painted the flesh something other than flesh?

I have no problem with a new skirmish game, but I wish they brought back Warhammer Fantasy Battles, perhaps back to the 6th edition iteration and no uber units. I do prefer the Old World and feel that this splintered world they now have to be utter rubbish(just my personal feeling in it). I may pick up the starter box and give it a go. Depends on whether I can rope someone into regular games.

I looked at the Bretonian stuff for AoS and found it better than expected. Might make a decent skirmish game. Someone mentioned they had tried it with "old" Warhammer figures. Seems a reasonable idea. New models are terrible. But playing a "give away" game (rules wise) with old figures won't help GW bottom line. Look for them to try and make old square base figures unuseable.

Agree with Capt Flash that going back to 6th (with 8th missile rules) would be a nice gift to loyal customers. Better army books too. GW could update & reprint – just to be nice – so don't count on it. Blowing up Old World was stupid (and mean to loyal fans).

Thought we would try AoS as skirmish (alternative to Lion Ramp) but both son and my playing partner tried at Dragon Con and did not like. Fussy weapon ranges and amebia units disliked (passionetly) by both. May try and put my spin on and see if they will give another chance.

Fantastic article, absolutely fantastic!

To supplement what you said so brilliantly, I would invite people to view this Youtube Channel. Andy shares the same sentiments about AOS and backs it up with fantastic narratives and discussions about the game.

Having played it, I can say with all certainty that AOS is WAY more than just a mindless adolescent skrimish game only fit for ten year olds as it has been branded by many, much more, and it can be played as a mass battle game perfectly well.

For those who say that AOS is nothing but a shallow skirmish game that offers no depth and offers no "tactics"(I'm still trying to figure out what some competitive and tournament players' definition of tactics are), open your mind and check this out, I love this guy:
