Warlord Games is releasing AWI Hessians ( link ) in Plastic as well as Artillery ( link ).

This is great news from my perspective. I will be buying one box of Hessians and two boxes of Artillery. Now I only need plastic cavalry.

JimDuncanUK22 Jan 2016 6:49 a.m. PST

Brilliant, I'll be getting some of them!

Private Matter22 Jan 2016 6:55 a.m. PST

Reading that the Hessian box can create "24 musketeers, fusiliers or grenadiers including command group of two officers, sergeant, drummer and two ensigns" as well as 6 Jaegers I may have to buy a couple boxes in order to build an assortment of troop types for my skirmish games.

Jeigheff22 Jan 2016 6:58 a.m. PST

I'm not into plastics (no insult intended), but even I find these sets very exciting. Some day, I might take the plunge.

Not very many metal figure ranges have had separate heads or headgear, which I think is a great idea for conflicts like the American Revolution. The old 25mm AWI Stone Mountain figures come to mind.

Private Matter22 Jan 2016 7:21 a.m. PST

Jeigheff – I first ignored the plastic figure lines when they first started coming out but decided to buy the plastic zombies from Wargames Factory as they were cheap and I needed/wanted lots of "filler" figures for ATZ games. Then my son bought some of their plastic Vikings and Saxons because they were cheaper than metal plus they were available on the shelf of our local gaming store. I was mildly impressed with the variations he could come up with when assembling them which appealed to my skirmish gaming side. About the same time I was getting pressed for storage space and spare funds so I made the decision to limit my scales for gaming. I went with 6mm for everything above skirmish games (except 10mm ACW and 1/285th Micro Armor) and then use 28mm for skirmish games. The ability to customize poses, head swaps, arm positions, etc is perfect for the appearance of my skirmish games. This means that plastic is just the ticket for me. I still buy metal for my special figures but plastic is my main stay in 20mm. I would say take the plunge for plastic as your filler troops, you'll be pleased.

I believe that the Euteka Continental dragoons have sepatate heads. I tried to talk Nic into doing that with the Ragged Continentals when I first proposed that for the 100 Club, but he thought it would be too much work for a speculative range. I wish he had done it. It would have been the awesomest, Dude.

King's Mountain definitely has separate heads, for everything but the Highlanders. Fantastic figures.

I just may try those plastic Hessians. You can never have too many Hessians.

I love plastics and all the opportunities they present for creativity/converstions, etc. – but those jagers look dreadful. Either whoever built that set for the photo simply can't model, or the jagers are going to need serious work to make them passable.

I was excited about the set for Imagi-Nations possibilities, but those jagers…. yikes.

Winston Smith22 Jan 2016 7:43 a.m. PST

Btw I see flags for Rall. NOT "von" Rall.
Unless the set comes with figures with no lapel, the figures wouldn't be right.

Interesting selections on the gun sprues. How many Molly Pitchers does one need in their army? grin
Nice way to accumulate female civilians, though. Jennie Crea?

I wish those Hessians were modeled in a marching pose. They might have been very useful for the start of a SYW army. Personally, I don't like my regular line infantry in the 18th century in firing pose.

^^ I agree with you. It appears that you must make a willy-nilly looking line. There should be an NCO figure beating everyone who is doing their own thing. I'd also prefer not to have the jaegers included, which to my mind, is strange packaging. There's just no pleasing some people. For those of you looking forward to the release, good luck with your projects. As John said, you can never have enough Hessians.

Bill N22 Jan 2016 12:03 p.m. PST

I will most likely pick up a couple of boxes of the Hessians. They didn't play a large role in the AWI southern campaign, but when they do show up it would be nice to have something other than stand in continentals.

Hafen von Schlockenberg22 Jan 2016 12:32 p.m. PST

Not to butt in to the 25mm discussion(well yes, actually), but I wanted to point out that Sash and Saber 40mm all have separate heads, except for the original Continental set,and include some extra heads in every set. And some heads are available as extras, round hats,Queen's Rangers, etc.
Of course, not exactly competitive, price wise, with 25mm plastic, but at about $1.90 USD per with the convention deal,I'd bet they are comparable to some metal lines.

Something to think about, for someone considering going into AWI,and contemplating a fair amount of lead purchase.

I hasten to add that I have no connection to S&S,other than as a fan;my selfish motive is that the more figures Chris sells, the more he'll make.

And in the hope that someday Russ Dunaway will finally be persuaded to include them in the OG Army system(sigh). If that happens, it's 40mm all the way, baby!

French Wargame Holidays22 Jan 2016 1:52 p.m. PST

Great news for imagination armies

Green Tiger22 Jan 2016 2:30 p.m. PST

Well that's my 1799 Russians sorted…just need new hats…

rxpjks122 Jan 2016 5:34 p.m. PST

If they were in marching pose I would buy a dozen boxes. Not a fan of the firing line poses.

Yeah I'm in.

Vigilant23 Jan 2016 11:54 a.m. PST

I don't understand the preference for marching rather than firing poses. Surely the point is to fire at each other, not challenge them to a marching competition? Just my opinion, each to his own.

Hafen von Schlockenberg23 Jan 2016 12:59 p.m. PST

'Cause they spent a lot more time marching than firing?

Bill N23 Jan 2016 2:52 p.m. PST

It appears that you must make a willy-nilly looking line. There should be an NCO figure beating everyone who is doing their own thing.

I get around the willy-nilly problem by grouping poses by platoon or company. First platoon will all be firing. Second might all be using ramrods and so forth. To get the right mix I do end up having to get multiple boxes.

I'd also prefer not to have the jaegers included,

I agree, or at least would have preferred fewer jaegers. One problem you run into whenever you do a set with multiple poses or multiple troop types is you are likely to end up with a mix that doesn't satisfy everyone…or anyone. If the set price is cheap enough though it doesn't matter. Those unneeded figures can be thrown or given away, or they can be used for conversions.

I'm not thrilled with how these look.

Then again, I'm currently doing AWI in 40mm.

Redcoat 5523 Jan 2016 7:06 p.m. PST

I am no expert in Hessians, but I do know that only enlisted men in the grenadiers were allowed facial hair. I can't tell from the pictures whether the officer must sport a mustache or not.

It does look like the grenadier heads are clean shaven and at least some of the hat men have mustaches which is something I would have hoped they would have reversed.

6mm Hero24 Jan 2016 10:24 a.m. PST

Both seem like good sets at a reasonable price. May pick up some at the next show I am at.

Clays Russians24 Jan 2016 7:14 p.m. PST

Red coat 55, the head are 2 part. You chose the hat so yes, you can put miters on mustache heads or just use all hat men and shave them with an exacto knife. Too easy

Clays Russians24 Jan 2016 7:19 p.m. PST

Rxpjks wants marching guys. Yes one sprue of firing line and one sprue of shouldered firelock would have been great for all three regular sets. From 20 plus years of doing uncle Billy" if your standing still you better be loading or getting ready to fire.

B6GOBOS26 Jan 2016 1:02 p.m. PST

I think I will pass on these. Just do not look right.
