Following up my post of my tavern kit project, I finally got to the stage where I could add the final details.

I found a really cool set of 25/28mm tavern/store signs at Miniature Building Authority's website.

If I recall correctly, I think the set was about $17.50 USD, and you get ten sign posts which includes a lantern as well as a barber sign in the shape of scissors, and one really cool tavern sign in the shape of a beer mug. I thought it was a bit pricey at first, but then I thought about the amount of labor and time it would take to scratch-build a set like that and decided it was well worth it. A set of ten would give me more than enough signs and more than I would ever need for the buildings that I have.

Here is some of the set;

Here are the two that I chose to use on my Stronghold Terrain tavern kit. They are nearly done except that I need to decide on a logo and name for my tavern;

The Stronghold kit did come with its own sign, but I didn't like the design of it. I had to use a pin vise to drill two holes in the timbers of the tavern so I could use these. The sign will be on the timbers above the front door, and the lantern will be on the timbers above the side door;

The rust effects on the metal parts were done with just a simple basecoat of bright silver with a wash of brownish/red over it. I painted it over the silver and then took a tissue and lightly dabbed it so that it left irregular splotches and stains on the silver. I think it achieves the look of rust pretty well, considering that I was just using ordinary craft paints.

Excellent color choices on the lantern – looks illuminated. I'm assuming these signs are for medieval or a little later? I say this because the shaped signs were designed for the illiterate age. Well, maybe a lot later – near universal education didn't arrive until late in the 19th century for much of the world.

@Early,

Thank you for the positive feedback!

Yes indeed, these would be medieval for the exact reason you articulated.

These will actually be used for Warhammer fantasy rather than historical games, but given that Warhammer is set in an other-worldly medieval type world, they fit in perfectly.

Here at last is the completed tavern, with its sign and lantern, open and ready for business!

Hope you like the results!;

Old Glory also does a set of tavern signs and lanterns in its Pirates range.
