After a discussion a while ago about basing of tanks, some like them some don't. The utility of protection and transport as well as bringing the vehicle up to the same level as based infantry are the plus but like many I do think its odd when a tank is zooming up a tarmac road that's its carrying around its own section of lawn….. So while basing some 6mm Napoleonics on Blucher bases for which I use magnetic bases I thought………..
how about using magnets on the base and vehicle to make the bases removable.
I just used some magnets I had lying around from a different project so you could fine tune it by sorting out the best magnet for the job. Cortirani ( magneticdisplays.co.uk) is where I get my magnetic stuff as a rule. Just used some double sided tape to glue the magnets to the base and then fixed steel paper or rubber magnetis sheet to the base of the tank. You can use different numbers of layers to get the height correct. Used two sets if magnets to prevent any 'revolving' of the tank on its base in transport. On a different tack, final three variations of the AFK done.
AFK crews due for release by end of the month. Tank models are PSC assembled and painted courtesy of The tank Garage L |

All the best ideas seem blindingly obvious afterwards. Good job Leon |

Cool, now make a base that simulates a road surface and you are good for both on/off road. |

Part of the reason that I base my tanks & vehicles is to prevent damage to tracks/wheels, etc & make a stronger model (many of mine are pre-Armourfast or -PSC so have multiple piece wheel/track arrangement). As I use them for participation games at shows as well, they need to be tough enough for "young Timmy"… Having said that, I do like this idea… Of course, I could always buy another set of stuff & do with road bases… hmmm now to work out a plan to get that past SWMBO |

Fozman…I have the opposite issue; that of trying to prevent SWMBO from seeing this and having her say 'why don't you re-base all of our vehicles like this…mine first obviously….' Piers – SWMBO had her lovely new char Bs on the table last night…I lost again….they just look SO good. |

Ah excellent. Nice to see someone else coming up with that! We did this with our tanks and vehicles some time ago as we had a glut of the bar magnets used on name badges from where I worked (we swapped over to pin badges due to cost). We constructed two types of bases. One for road and urban use and one for countryside. During the game the bases would be switched according to where the tank or vehicle was. In addition we would remove the base altogether when the vehicle was knocked out so it didn't impede movement of other vehicles and helped to signify the vehicle was no longer operational. In the end though, although it looked good, it became a pain to change the bases round each time the vehicle transitioned from road/urban to countryside. Particularly in large games. There was also the fact that infantry/support weapons were still based up on permamnent urban or countryside bases. Still a good idea. Just not practical for us. I can see it working well in smaller, skirmish type games though. |

I use black plasticard which is narrower than the full width of the tracks and not as long as the footprint. So you pretty much don't see it at all. That adds some strength to the model. I then have a piece of steel paper on the bottom of the plasticard so the model doesn't rattle round in my mag sheet lined transport box. |

I wonder about getting clear acrylic cases. I use some for 28mm figures but might be a way for 20mm figures. Duane |

How go the Panzer Lehr Leon? |

Blacky750, Just finished the last of the 'bits', still having a bit of a problem with ammo belts, castability vs realism ( the usual!) but starting work on the riflemen and NCO this week so should have some finished figures this time next week. L |

Great, look forward to seeing them, how many will there be eventually? |

Blacky750, Four rifelmen/NCO in 5 poses ( casual advance, running, firing, prone and dead)so thats 20 figs and two LMG teams. Poses a bit up in the air at the moment, casual moving, moving fast, prone firing and dead so far. Three man teams. So thats an additional 12 so a total of 32 so far………..lol Thats the list Im working to at the moment but not entirely sure about the extra LMG team member, might rethink and just distribute the extra ammo amongst the whole squad. Got a couple of bits of reading to do before make final choice. A sniper ( in Heer pattern smock plus sidekick) Pz shcreck team and not sure what to do about pzfausts at the mo. After that will see what extras sales make viable. Got a heck of a lot of tank/SPG crews to make as well. Stug LMG gunner ( Shirt sleeve order)looking good so far. L |
