I have tried the Army Painter DIP with little or no success. My 28 mm figures just end up looking dirty. Not the intended effect at all.
While moving some stuff from my basement I came across a bunch of 54 mm plastic figures that I had block painted years ago. I did a few conversions and gave the figures a pretty basic paint job. You can see what these looked like in the first photo. By the way, that garish greenish/yellowish color is really buckskin. The flash didn't do it any favors.

I decided to give the Army Painter a try to see if it would work on the larger scale figures. I did as the Master (that's you,Phil) instructed and brushed it on sparingly. I attempted to remove large pools from the figures by brushing in a downward motion, with a large, flat brush.
I can't tell you how pleased I am! I let everything dry overnight then sprayed Dulcote over the figures to kill the shine. For the first time, I actually got good results from the Dip or Magic Wash or any of the dozens of washes that I have tried.

This takes care of the Militia. I still have Hessians, British, Continentals and French, all block painted and ready to be dipped. I used the Soft Tones for these. Any advice on what to use on the rest?

Real fine!

I like many of the tips presented in this 54mm painting tutorial by Ken Cliffe from "All The King's Men."

I like to give my 54s a coat of Future Floor Wax -- neat; and let that dry overnight before brushing on Army Painter Soft Tone.

If pressed for time -- and the weather cooperates; I sometimes give block-painted 54s a coat of Krylon Clear Gloss before using the Army Painter.

The pre-treatment helps prevent the lighter colors from becoming muddy-looking.

You're heading in the right direction.

Block paint, brushed on Soft Tone, matt varnish and base.

They look fine although some of your bases are warping. Maybe try something a bit thicker.

9 out of 10 so far.

You could try varnish before Soft Tone, might come out a little cleaner.

Throw all the darker tones away, they are just too dark!

I think they are lookin great. Love the dip. I use it on all my 28mm figs. I use Future & add about 5 drops of Sepia ink to one drop of black ink. Brush it on, get rid of pools & make sure you hit every bit of the fig. Dulcote. Done! I've never used Army Painter dip, & never thought the way I do it has made my figs look dirty. In fact I think it makes them look much more realistic.

Jim Those are temporary bases. They are on baseball cards!
I just wanted to see how they looked with some static grass thrown around.I'll get around to basing in due time.
