My wife is cleaning out her China service and getting ready to sell them and she puts out a tea pot and says nonchalantly "Oh, by the way this supposedly came from the Boxer Rebelllion." The man who brought it back was Lee Gross my Mother-in Law's grandfather. No one knows anything about this guy. Where can I look for rosters of units that fought there, and he was American.

A quick look on Wikipedia shows the following US army units involved:
9th Infantry Regiment
14th Infantry Regiment
6th Cavalry
Battery F, 5th Artillery.

Also Various detachments of the USMC

Not sure if there were others, but that is a good start.

I saw that as well but I need rosters

Look up their unit histories and find out which "Fort" they garrisoned back home. There may be a unit archive there with someone in charge of giving out information.

You are selling a tea service from the boxer rebellion?!

Irish Marine16 Jan 2016 1:25 p.m. PST

Not selling my wife is going through her China service for sale and brought this one tea pot out and told what it was. She thinks we should just throw it out.

Please do not do that. If you do not want to keep it please post a few pictures. I might be interested in this.

Oh I'll hide it from her. But I'm really interested in her great grand father who was there.

The pot could be very valuable. Many allied troops looted the towns they occupied and then sold off their loot for a pittance. You might try contacting the Military Personnel Center and see what they can do for you and what documentation you'll need to obtain info.

You can snap a photo and email to an appraiser at Antiques Roadshow (US). They have helped me in the past and can direct you where you need to go. Make sure you place something in the photo to determine the size and also snap the bottom of the teapot for any markings.

I believe service records are retained by the National Archives. You should be able to do some googling and find a place to request information about relatives. I expect his service record would mention whether he participated in the Boxer Rebellion or not.
