Hi All, can someone point me in the direction for a source for WWII German Aircraft codes, for both fighters and other aircraft ? I know that fighter aircraft had numbers then either a line or other symbol, also they were in different colours. Bombers and other aircraft had letter -number – 2 letters, and one of the second letters was often coloured, how did this system work. Cheers Greg |

I tried a Google search for Ww2 german squadron markings, and about the fourth or fifth result was "German Aircraft Markings" on warbirdresoucregroup.org Looks like a good place to start. Mollinary |

Hi Greg, For Jadgwaffe markings, see if this link helps: link It's from 1/144 Direct's eBay store. He makes a very substantial range of markings for WW2 airforces. I find it to be a good source for all kinds of decals. |

I have a crapload of 1/144 decals if any one wants to buy some: german (incl squadron markings, British, US, Russian (loads of types), Hungarian, Italian, Polish, Romanian… |

Greg, It's a complex but very logical system. Too detailed to describe. The Historie & Collections book on the Me109 does a good job of explaining how the entire system works for fighters. The link MM gives above is good but you really need to have some sample colour schemes in front of you whilst reading it to help understand the system. What I don't see there is all the tactical markings units added like the yellow or white noses and colour bands in front of the tail. Again they all mean something: theatre or role for example. For Bombers the first letter and number denote the formation and the coloured letter the individual aircraft. Different colours are used for different formations within a Gruppe. Again it's complex but very logical. Somewhere on TMP is a link to a site where it is all explained. Worth a trawl though the TMP aviation boards to find that link. IIRC it details all the codes for all the formations. Look here… link |

Thanks Timmo and Mollinary for the source it's just what I was after. Also thanks MacrossMartin that was a good source I've been looking at the tank numbers from Mehusla. I''m afraid I'm not interested in 1/144 decals I'm a 1/300th man! |

Mollinary – sorry I didn't look as there wasn't an active link and I was being lazy. It would have been easier for everyone had I cut and pasted your URL into my browser. I know for next time. Still the OP got what they wanted. : ) |
