D6 junkie had a topic going the other day about how his wife enjoyed watching colonial movies and wanted recommendations. Anyway hafen and i hijack his topic a bit discussing movies about the new zealand maori wars and what has been made and what should be made. So i'll start with what has been made
1 rewi last stant. Silent movie made in 1924 remade 1940
2. Utu
3. utu redux
4. Dead lands
5. 1998 tv documentary called New Zealand land wars
6. River queen

Movies that should be made
1. Von tempsky and the nz forest ranges
2. The waikato wars and the struggle of the tuhoe tribe
3. The taranaki land war

Its a start so feel free to contribute your views
regards
Stephen

Good start,Stephen;I'll add to the "want to see" list and go back to the beginning--the Flagstaff War. Plenty of humor potential, plus the "Swell of the Ocean"!

I hope you and I,plus Cursedcaptain and BrianSmaller, aren't the only Maori Wars fans here; not exactly mainline, even in Colonials. There must be more--there are four figure lines I know of--somebody must be buying them!

There are still a lot of negative connotations about Von Tempskys name among some of us Kiwis.

Not sure a movie about him would get a lot of support in the 'Naki.

There was a 6 part tv series aired 1977 called governor grey who was the first governor general of nz. Yep hone heke and the flag pole would be good. There was another tv series based around a british gunsmith and his involvement in supplying arms to the maoris. Maybe brian may recall it. Anyway ill get back to you on that one as im at work at the moment

Utu is one of the finest films about settler-indigenous conflict made, anywhere. I have just received my copy of Utu Redux and am looking forward to finding the time.

Hi artaxerxes a great moive hope you find the time over the weekend to enjoy utu redux.
Hafen did a better of research and will post the details tomorrow of the main people but here's a wee preview. Scenario taranaki wars involvrs a religious movement pai marire thats associated with the kingi movement. This religious group as an extremist element known as the hauhau which carry out some of the worst violence during the conflict. Meanwhile 400? Maoris are shipped off to the chatman islands. Te kooti escapes back to the mainland to contune the struggle.battles include assault on sentry hill and battle of moutoa. More to follow
