Just to let any of you in the Northamptonshire area know the Northampton Battlefields Society has Richard Brooks, wargamer, military historian and author of some of the best Osprey books to come and talk to us.

First talk is on the 25th February and is about Simon De Montford and his battles. It takes place at 7:30pm at the Northampton Marriott Hotel on Eagle Drive, near Delapre Golf Course ( link )

Entry is free to members, £5GBP for non-members. Society membership is £10GBP, and if you join on the evening you can do this talk for free. We have Richard coming back in October to talk about William Marshal and the battle of Lincoln and your membership would include that one too.

I've heard Richard a couple of times and I can't stress how good he is as a military history speaker for wargamers. Because he wargames as well he has to get his research right so his games make sense, – you can see that in his Osprey books as well as he ferrets out what wargamers want to know ( number of men, frontages etc ) . There'll be a Q&A afterwards as well, so if you want to talk about medieval military history generally there'll be time for that too.

We have other talks during the year as well. Our next one is on the 28th January and is by Mathew Morris, the archaeologist who found Richard III ( link ) . Less wargamerly perhaps, but still looks to be fascinating.

By coming along and supporting us you just don't get a number of great talks, but your money goes towards a good cause. Plus – icing on cake – if you haven't already bought Mike Ingram's excellent new book on the Battle of Northampton he'll be there too, so you could buy one & get it signed too.

Will be coming along – looking forward to both! – the Society is moving from strength to strength getting these speakers.

Would love to be there for that, but alas will be at work on the other side of the world!
