Who makes nice 15mm ACW figures in your opinion.

lesbt6503 Jan 2016 8:28 a.m. PST

Peter pig does a very comprehensive range of figures (70-80 packs), equipment (20 packs) and ships (40 models).
Along with heads for conversions, civilians, a train, and a lot of scenery items.

Battle Honors and Eureka Miniatures (same sculpts as BH but closer to 18mm). However, the BH molds are getting a bit old.

a vote for warrior miniatures line , very nice and cheap … the figures look like they were done by the same guy that did the tumbling dice figures ?

Blue Moon appears to have everything, or nearly everything

Freikorps has an extensive range of 15mm (not 18mm) infantry, cavalry, artillery and buildings:

AB, Old Glory

Lots and lots of good choices. I think my ScaleCreep line are pretty nice, fitting well with AB.

These side by side shots may help:

AB would be my preference.

I don't know what Minifigs are are like. I suspect they are their usual clean simple style.

Stone Mountain has a nice and complete range.

rorymac03 Jan 2016 10:35 a.m. PST

I have OG, AB, Blue Moon, and Minifigs. I love OG for the sheer volume of poses. AB is very well done and mixes well with OG. Fewer poses, though, and more expensive than OG. Blue Moon is nice but are larger than OG & AB and more expensive than OG. Minifigs are a little smaller and pretty much only one pose. I am using them for regular US infantry in frockcoat. Fewer poses doesn't mean that much to me when going for the regular look. Overall, I would still go with OG if I was starting out, but now I am selectively adding from the others I mentioned.

Sorry, but Eureka Miniatures I meant AB. Eureka Miniatures sells AB here in the US.

jowady03 Jan 2016 11:49 a.m. PST

I like Stone Mountain, nice detail, several poses in each bag and the price is great. Plus their artillery is some of the best I've seen. In fact I'll be ordering some in the next few days.

I have a range of manufacturers and most of them are good figures. Here are some specific comments:

Blue Moon – my current favorite, nice castings, good variety, nearly complete range, very cost competitive with OG membership card, they are a bit larger than most, three generally fill a fire and fury base.

Stone Mountain – started with these and always enjoy painting them, little smaller, very clean castings generally, good broad range. I'll probably add some more even though I am probably going to use BM as the bulk of my troops.

Musket Miniatures – ditto for Stone Mountain mostly, same sculpture, company may still be on a bit of a hiatus (I think some ranges are back at the son's company). I don't love their cavalry but it is serviceable.

Peter Pig – nice figures, one of the more costly ranges in the US. Bulky clothes, different style from MM and SM but I still use them together. Nice small packs so you can get want you want without excess. Make some great marker figures for their rules (figs with ammo boxes, etc.)

Minifigs – skinny relative to everyone else, mine were cleanly sculpted, bought them to try them out but I don't expect to add any more to my collection, a little "wooden"

Old Glory – I have a small number of these. The sculpting is a little rough with deep relieve that works well for either dry brushing or washing. They are one of the lower quality lines in my opinion. I know some people love them but I don't. I think they look OK but will not be adding any more to my collection. They look fine from 3' away but I find them a little frustrating to paint, things like straps and gear and be a little confusing on the actual sculpts.

I think that covers all the figures I have that are still available.

Flashman,
Some of best painted ACW figures I've seen. I think you have the colours spot on – just as I imagine them in my mind's eye.

Jeigheff03 Jan 2016 3:46 p.m. PST

Personally, I'm a big fan of AB figures (sold by Eureka Miniatures here in the U.S.) Anthony Barton did a great job of sculpting the soldiers of the ACW. The range isn't extensive, but it covers the basics and it does have some variety.

Battle Honors figures are the exact same sculpts, but the molds producing the BH figures are worn. There are also some converted AB figures in some of the BH packs which are okay, but not great. So I'd choose Eureka over Battle Honors. You can also buy any and all of the individual figures you want from Eureka Miniatures.

I don't mean to be a shill, but you might have noticed some threads here on TMP which give credit to the great service provided by Rob at Eureka Miniatures, USA. It's something to think about if you mail-order your figures.

I also like some of Minifigs' 15mm ACW figures from both the 2nd generation from the 80s (long out of production) and the 3rd generation, which is currently available only from the UK. Figures from both sometimes turn up on Ebay and elsewhere.

They almost seem to be unknown, but MJ Miniatures makes a small 15mm ACW range, again available only from the UK. The MJ range is pretty limited, but I'm very happy with the marching Confederates that I've gotten in the last year.

Stone mountain for artillery. Best there is.

i have old glory, mini rigs, and battle honors in my collection. I heR blue moon has nice figures.

cabin4clw03 Jan 2016 6:41 p.m. PST

I love the OG line. Great poses and fairly easy to paint.

Scott MacPhee03 Jan 2016 6:48 p.m. PST

Blue Moon all the way.

jowady03 Jan 2016 8:14 p.m. PST

I would note that Blue Moon is 18mm, not 15mm.

Frostie04 Jan 2016 12:50 a.m. PST

If you are in the UK, look on EBay.

There are nearly 2000 Frie Korps figures, all unpainted up for auction

Frei Koprs are nice sculpts, well the 7YW are anyway

Buckeye AKA Darryl04 Jan 2016 5:37 a.m. PST

Another consideration, if you are wanting figures closer to 15mm and not the larger 18mm figures (AB, Blue Moon, etc.), would be consider Kallistra's 12mm range. Fairly extensive, they have a buy five get one pack free deal, and they are very animated sculpts.

Comparison shot with 10mm figures:

I had no idea Musket Miniatures were that much larger than Old Glory.

Thank you for all the information and comparison photos. It appears there are some compatibility issues with some makes being 15mm and others 18mm. I will study the photos and see which is best.

I believe that the Musket Miniature is 15mm, the rest, including the Old Glory (which I think is 10mm) are 12mm and smaller.

Benvartok04 Jan 2016 2:37 p.m. PST

No love here for Essex? One of the original ranges with extensive options and exceptional detail in true 15mm. The Rebs with knees showing through torn pants are one example. Large number of generals and what every army needs is a brass band!

Peter pig feature in my rebel army with the odd tall AB figure.

You will not find more varients anywhere then in Blue Moon
The scupting cannot be beat!! Then the price and all the glorious wonderful people you get to deal with a Old Glory!!!

My Rebs are AB and gorgeous. My Yanks are OG and passable. You only pay for them and paint them once and then you have them forever – thats why I try not to go go with cheap stuff.

Just take a look at scomac pics above -- worth a thousand words!!! Like I said --- I would put blue moon up against anyone.
Oh --and the money thing and the thought of "cheap". There are some things moneyjust cannot buy= love, style, class and not always the best.

Oh Bugger05 Jan 2016 4:32 a.m. PST

Mine are pretty much all Freikorps from QRF and they are great figures except the gunners which are too small. I used Minifigs gunners which fit just right.

That said there is a lot of nice ranges about.

With all due respect while Stone Mountain figures are inexpensive they are far from "cheap". They too exhibit "love, style, class" as in fact do all the figures from other other manufacturers that I have seen mentioned here. I will note that the rest of the people here, including those who discussed your product managed to do it without taking cheap shots at other mini lines.

avidgamer05 Jan 2016 7:02 a.m. PST

I like the Blue Mon figures as well. What I have are amazingly detailed and very historically accurate for 15/18mm. I even have the WSS and they are first rate too. All of these are VERY inexpensive with my Old Glory card! ;) Love it.

Old Glory Sponsoring Member of TMP05 Jan 2016 8:37 a.m. PST

Jowady, if you notice, you will see my word cheap is in qoute marks? I was referring to the statement above mine.
The "love, style, class" comment was not in reference to Miniatures.
I agree that there are many fine ranges out there and I have used many of them in my armies for many periods.
