Despite the name, the Persian Gulf is international waters, Stu. Means every ship, regardless of flag, has a right to be there.

And if the Iranians weren't shooting or mining merchant ships, there probably wouldn't have been a US carrier there in the 1980s.

stu … as Lion points out … it is international waters … And yes, if the Persians were not being provocative, the US CVN would not be there. At least for that reason. Stop trying to stretch the facts to fit your continuing anti-US rhetoric/narrative …
