I bought the Team Yankee rule book and thought I'd dig out some "modern" GHQ tanks that I bought for a project almost 25 years ago!

I have loads of T72s, BMP1s, M1 Abrams and M113s. What I don't have are the air, anti-air and artillery units.

Whilst without a doubt the GHQ stuff is superb, it costs a fortune here in the UK.

Would it look too odd to mix in H&R models?

Cheers,

Furgie

It will be OK for the most part. H&R's newer models are excellent. I certainly wouldn't mix the same vehicle from both companies together. Scotia stuff goes well with H&R. I mix all 3 together with no problems. Good Luck

I took some comparison pics you might find useful.

I think GHQ has gotten larger over the years. If your pieces are that old, they will be smaller, and quite possibly more compatible with H&R.

GHQ is 1/285 and I think H&R are 1/300, so for the same vehicle GHQ will be bigger. I would not mix the same vehicle from both companies but for different chassis, go ahead and mix away!

I mix as described. H&R is a great place to pick up the one off's as well as lot's of trucks.

I often mix. I don't find any disadvantage to it, particularly if it allows you to assemble a collection of vehicles that are not all made by any one vendor.

This pic shows the "motorpool" of my Romanian force. Romania got material from many sources, through pre-war relations with France and Italy, and wartime trade (and war booty) from Germany.

In the front row are GHQ Laffly primer movers, H&R Laffly recon cars, and a GHQ Polish field car. The second row has GHQ Horsch light trucks, GHQ SDKfz 8 light half tracks, and an H&R Fiat light truck. The back row has several GHQ Renault 3 ton trucks, and an open-topped H&R Renault truck hauling barrels.

I have many H&R models, and often mix-and match to achieve the variety of vehicles I want. I also often mix the infantry figures, yes even on the same stand, if the poses are useful to me.

Again from my Romanians, here is an artillery gun line deployed for action. The guns are GHQ Skoda 100mm howitzers (from the Italian line). The gun crews are a mix of H&R and GHQ figures (both from the Soviet artillery crew sets). The local LMG security stand is GHQ Romanian infantry. The command stand has a GHQ figure (standing with binoculars), an H&R figure (standing, no binoculars), and a Scotia figure (kneeling with field telephone set).

I have no objection to mixing. But as others have stated, you might wish to avoid mixing manufacturers of the same vehicle.

Just my thoughts. Your mileage may vary.

Don't forget Scotia, which have quite an extensive modern range, with quite a few 'exotic' types for engineering and bridging. Their wheeled anti-tank and anti-aircraft are super too.

You might want to check out 'Mainforce' infantry from Magister Miletum too. They're 1/285, in realistic action poses (mostly prone, keeping their heads down, sensible boys) and already based. They're easy to paint too (see the Editors post in the 'Showcase' section.

Back when I was doing micro armor back in the 1970s and 80s, I used a lot of H-R for none combat items like trucks and jeeps. I used ghq and CnC for AFV. A lot of people did that back then.

steamingdave4731 Dec 2015 10:30 a.m. PST

I have both, but I am gradually getting rid of the H+R models that I also have in GHQ, as the GHQ are much nicer models and are noticeably larger. If I don't have a particular model in GHQ I am happy to keep the H+R. Price difference is huge, so for transports etc H+R are a cost effective choice. I also prefer H+ R infantry.
