I have found a couple of old TMP posts on this topic with some useful information. But I also found a reference that seems to indicate they also carried a British Kings colors as well. Is this correct? |

DId you do a search in the TMP? There was earlier discussion on this subject. IIRC the conclusion was no king's colors. Most flag styles are unknown so many use liberty (including GMB) as to what, so what you do can be up to you and will be correct for your collection. I used what I could find on web and TMP etc. and made small adjustments to those known styles, for the other regiments( without info on them). The militia is wide open in regard to what is known beyond that from the waterloo captured flag info/ or museum of Hanover ( can recall the name but in the TMP discussions). Others will chime in with good direction also soon as well. Good luck and have fun on your discoveries and plans, as I did. I have power point slide, if you are interested ( for 15mm) MG |

Scott, The British King's Colour, for all British Regiments of Foot, was the flag of the United Kingdom. Hanover was a separate state, with a separate government, but the same King ruled them both. It would have been totally unacceptable to the Hanoverian government for their army to carry flags of another nation. The KGL did carry British King's and Regimental Colours (one each per battalion) but they were of course legally part of the British Army, not the Hanoverian Army. All sources which I have seen suggest that Hanoverian battalions carried one flag each at most (many sources suggest that not all Hanoverian battalions had flags), with the possible exception of the Verden battalion who were presented with a pair of colours stitched by the ladies of that town, but there is no record of those flags. Having said that, all of my wargame Hanoverian battalions carry one flag each. The regular battalions in the pattern of an unknown Hanoverian battalion white flag, shown in several sources, but I have modelled it in the facing colour of that particular battalion. My landwehr all have a flag in their facing colour, but with a white horse of Hanover on one side and their town badge on the other. The exception is the Gifhorn battalion where their white horse is superimposed on a tree, exactly like the surviving flag in the town museum. Rod |

Back in 2005 or so a collection of Hanoverian related military items were sold in auction by Sothebys. In this collection were a number of KGL Colours and two Waterloo era Hanoverian Infantry flags. This is the two sides of the Hoya Bn. flag:
This is one side of Calenburg's flag:

The Kings German Legion were technically British so that's why they carried British flags. The Hanovarian army was a seperate states forces. |
