If you mean the second battle (Koan, 1281) then I would srick with the depiction of Japanese troops on the Mōko Shūrai Ekotoba.

I remember reading in Turnbull's works that Sashimonos were introduced in the 15th century, to help differentiate troops wearing similar armour, as happened in the Senguku Jidai (age of warring states.

In the earlier period you describe, fighting the mongols, or for that matter the Minamoto/Taira wars, Samurai were quite distinctive. The supporting troops were mostly unarmoured, and quite distinctive from the Bushi.

From that same sire there is a link to the Bowdoin site bowdoin.edu/mongol-scrolls This has comparisons of various versions of the scrolls. Some are much clearer than the original but compare for accuracy.
