We were arguing about this a few weeks ago, but then our local arthouse cinema ran it along with "Its a wonderful life" and "Muppet's Christmas Carol" as part of their Christmas movies season, and we agreed that put an end to the argument.

You can't argue with the arthouse cinema.

Paint it Pink25 Dec 2015 9:54 a.m. PST

Yes, no question about it. It promotes good cheer and redemption.

nazrat25 Dec 2015 10:00 a.m. PST

Well, it is set at Xmas. But I hope with all the wanton violence and brutal killing it contains it will never be considered a "Christmas movie"-- isn't it all supposed to be about peace and love? WWJK? My guess would be NOBODY…

Dave Crowell25 Dec 2015 10:33 a.m. PST

It's a Christmas tradition and it's a movie, ergo Christmas movie. QED

Granted it's a pretty unlikely Christmas movie, but it is.

What is a Christmas movie? Is the movie that is set during Christmas a Christmas movie? So is diehard also a Hanukkah movie? Is a Christmas movie one that is a happy Christmas spirit movie? is a Christmas movie one that has it has its basic premise a Christmas theme that could not take place otherwise. Diehard did not need Christmas , it could've been at a Thanksgiving party. Or John could have been coming to visit his family at Easter. So diehard is a Christmas time movie, but not a Christmas theme movie. Ho Ho Ho

Yes, but I maintain that while the original Die Hard is the better film, Die Hard 2 is more festive.

Dom,
that's quite spooky as that was precisely my point when we discussed this last week!

Andrew Walters25 Dec 2015 11:41 a.m. PST

It's an anytime movie, and it's also a Christmas movie.

Though I think that without a definition of the term "Christmas movie" the conversation is just enjoyable pontificating.

David Manley25 Dec 2015 12:38 p.m. PST

IIRC it was voted best Christmas Movie in a poll in the UK a couple of years ago, so the answer is evidently yes :)

rmcaras Supporting Member of TMP25 Dec 2015 1:11 p.m. PST

yas..

Sloppypainter25 Dec 2015 1:31 p.m. PST

It has Christmas music in it. "Ho ho ho. Now I have a machine gun." Tell me that ain't Christmas dialog. It just has a slightly higher body count than most Christmas movies.

Bashytubits25 Dec 2015 2:08 p.m. PST

Yippy kay yay.

Cattle Dog25 Dec 2015 3:45 p.m. PST

the floating ash at the end of the movie from the fires in the building even looks like falling snow.

Gunfreak Supporting Member of TMP25 Dec 2015 4:16 p.m. PST

Yes Die Hard is the best action movie mad (followed by terminator 2)
But its also one of the best Christmas movies made.
