While re reading Hughes's Conquest I came upon a passage about Cortez using Lombards which were ships swivel guns to supplement his firepower on the march to Tlaxcalla. It was noted that Lombards were loaded by applying a detatchable breech containing the shot and the charge and that a number of pre loaded breeches were available. Two things come to mind firstly for a little while the Lombards could sustain a more rapid rate of fire than normal for guns. Secondly the Lombards must have been mounted on something and given the nature of meso American roads I'd say wheels were unlikely. It seems to me that something like the Scottish frame is more likely. This would give us teams of indian porters carrying the frames and the Lombards along with everything else. Any thoughts or further information? |

I don't think you can rule out either carriages or frames. link link

The solid wheel carraige on your second link is certainly a possibility. The Spanish carpenters could have knocked that up quicly enough. |

I thought this was going to be a very unlikely army match-up! |

My guess is it was basically a swivel gun, and was probably carried with the baggage overland. |
