Will we see a M981 FIST a model option on the M901 ITV kit from Battlefront? It seems like an easy addition to the kit. Did Team Yankee have a M981 in the novel. I do not recall? Thanks |

I do not think they did. It was Bannon and the XO's job to help spot. Of course that was not needed long. |

Something I ought to do with our M901 |

in 15mm the difference from an itv is hardly worth worrying about, imho! |
GeoffQRF | 21 Dec 2015 9:39 a.m. PST |
That's why we haven't done it so far :-) |

I agree with Shaun. What's the point? |

To sell to the anal retentive types? "The number of sprockets on the road wheels is incorrect," crowd can afford it…
|
11th ACR | 21 Dec 2015 2:46 p.m. PST |
"The number of sprockets on the road wheels is incorrect" Pretty much it. The M981 FIST-V was made from all the obsolete M901's when they were replaced by M2's. The vehicle is pretty much the same except for a few details. Were you would normally have the two exit ports for the TOW missiles those are solider on the M981. So they painted two black circles the same size as the TOW exit ports, so it looks like a M901. M901
M981 (No TOW exit ports)
M981 (Dummy TOW exit ports)
The easiest way to ID the difference from a distance is: Most (99%) of the M901's only have one radio antenna. Most (99%) of the M981's have four radio antenna's M981's have four radio antenna's Two antenna's on each side left and right side of the hammer head. Two antenna's on each side over the rear fender/fuel cells of the Veh. On A3 model) on the A2 model they would be mounted on the hull on the rear.

The answer is to just use M-901's and let the players figure out which one is the M-981. Fog of War! Much more exciting than Flames of War! Cheers and good gaming. Rod Robertson. |

Seems if you are so motivated, this can be fixed with a little filler and sheet plastic. Damon. |
GeoffQRF | 21 Dec 2015 3:17 p.m. PST |
Perhaps I should just fill the holes on the 901 hammerhead, sell it as a 981 and you can paint them back on? |

They do have an attached FISTV commanded by a guy named Unger. He buys the farm attacking Hill 214 if I am not mistaken. |

I wonder why the Team Yankee rule book only provided the forward observer with a M113 and not a M981. |

"I wonder why the Team Yankee rule book only provided the forward observer with a M113 and not a M981." Most likely do to the M981 not being fielded till 1987. link I know the book came out in 87, but it was mostly written pre-fielding of the FIST-V. Up till then I only saw FISTers in ether 1/4 tons or M113's and Bn. or Sqdn. level would be operating out of a M577 in the rear with the TOC. With all of the laser designators and such the army needed something to carry all of that equipment and give it some protection. And as a Scout we did our on fire missions. |

So… do you want a modified hammerhead turret for a dedicated M981? |
11th ACR | 22 Dec 2015 6:54 a.m. PST |
To me there is no problem as I work in 6 mm – 1/285th – 1/300th scale. But yes there are many small differences. Also there is a different trim vain (The serf board) But that's the A# model trim vain. |
GeoffQRF | 22 Dec 2015 7:53 a.m. PST |
It has an extra flotation box on the front. I don't think that is specific to the M981. I may do it as a separate piece, along with the addon fuel tanks, as an M113A3 upgrade |
11th ACR | 22 Dec 2015 8:41 a.m. PST |
"flotation box on the front" = Trim Vain (The serf board as we called them.) Most A3 models of 113 series of vehicles have this type of Trim Vain. |
Garand | 22 Dec 2015 9:10 a.m. PST |
Totally OT Geoff, but where is that pic from? If Academy is releasing an ITV in 1/35 scale, that means I can stop goofing around with the old Italeri kit… :) Damon. |
Louie N | 22 Dec 2015 9:30 a.m. PST |
Thanks 11th ACR I was provided information that said it was introduced early. This clears it up. |
GeoffQRF | 22 Dec 2015 1:27 p.m. PST |
Just found it off the net, Google M981 on images and you'll probably find the source. Edit: found it, a YouTube video. Appears to be an Academy 1/35 model Most A3 models of 113 series of vehicles have this type of Trim Vain Yes it's a modification to the trim vane (a flotation box, presumably because the added weight made it [nose] heavier in the water) which seems to be standard, not limited to the M981. |
Lion in the Stars | 22 Dec 2015 8:24 p.m. PST |
@Geoff: If you make a M981 model, I'd buy it. But I really don't see a lot of sales, probably not more than 1 per person per camo scheme. |

I know at Hoenfells(SP) my fist guys where always complaining about being identified as ITVs. They very much did not want to be identified as 11-anythings. owen |
