The grass tufts and flowers for the bases are nearly all home made ones and dead easy and cheap to make with a Flockbox.
As for the colours I found a website that specifies what dyes were available at the time and used the Vallejo paints suggested. I toned them down with a wash of nutbrown ink to make them look suitably 'dark' and scruffy.
