I'm planning to see it next week.

However, as has always happened up to this point, something WILL happen that throws that plan out the window.

For the last two movies I was planning to catch at the cinema, someone in my family died and as timing would have it, the funerals were held on the days I had available to see them.

I've read the script already, though (well, a shooting script because no matter how airtight JJ thought his security was, SFX people gossip and share Bleeped text where they shouldn't)

Mithmee23 Dec 2015 11:51 p.m. PST

This Saturday at the 10:00 clock IMAX showing with my youngest daughter and her boyfriend.

15mm and 28mm Fanatik24 Dec 2015 11:21 a.m. PST

Full of plot holes, bad directing, silly story line.

Point taken. The original SW (Episode IV) didn't fare much better: link

And speaking of plot holes: link

;-)

mrkprkr25 Dec 2015 3:21 a.m. PST

It was awful. Okay, not awful just a nice cute Disney movie.
But it was NOT Star Wars. No energy, or fast paced action of the original. the directing was high school level, most of the aliens seem to have magically left the galaxy. The music was typical bland Disney music-when they weren't ripping off John Williams. Reise was one of the worse bad guys in movie history. Not scary or even meanacing. He couldn't even keep his black helmit on more than a few minutes in the movie. Thereby showing that he wasn't scared or a mutant- just a nerd with a big nose. A very awful replacement for Darth Vader.

Lardie the Great25 Dec 2015 11:03 a.m. PST

Mrkprkr the music was by John Williams……
The tone and the look is close to spot on (except for Ren's helmet which seems to be a WW2 german stahlhelm and his shuttle looks boring) I wonder if they re-cut the film as various rumours came out and wouldn't be surprised if there's a directors cut. Loved all the new characters and that Han & Chewie were central to the story. In the end will any film meet everyones expectations?

boy wundyr x26 Dec 2015 9:04 p.m. PST

Saw it today and loved it – it was Star Wars again (after Ep. 1-3) for me. I don't understand the "no energy or fast paced action of the original" comment, I've had several friends with young (6-10 year-old) children who couldn't get into Ep. 4 because it is slower paced relative to modern movies. All that downtime on Tattoine and their attention wanders. I don't notice it, but then it's always been the way it was.

Not sure about the aliens comment either – I saw lots.

Goonfighter28 Dec 2015 4:00 a.m. PST

Saw it last night. I don't think it'll ever be the same for me as seeing the original film for the first time but this did a fine job and obliterated the awful prequels for me. Great fun.

I just read though that it's Abrams first and only Star Wars film. Have to wonder who gets to do the next; if he kept on and delivered three like this I'd be a happy fanboy.

Oddly, there was one scene, with a dark figure stalking through snow clad trees when I momentarily lost it and thought I was watching Game of Thrones.

Captain Gideon28 Dec 2015 8:16 a.m. PST

Goonfighter say what you want about the prequels but for me I thought they weren't that bad just my humble opinion.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa28 Dec 2015 11:54 a.m. PST

Saw it last night, not bad IMHO, seemed to borrow heavily from the original – though given it was clearly scripted with existing fans in mind probably not surprising.

Seemed to take at least something from the old expanded universe – though given I'm not that familiar with the material that's really just an impression. I thought there were some interesting similarities between the First Order and the New Order background in the old WEG RPG. But I thought they were riffing on the 'Nazi's in Spacceeee' meme a little too much for my taste (for a Star Wars movie). Personally I don't find the First Order quite as sinister as Palpatine and his Empire. Though the relationship between the Jedi and non-Jedi and their supreme leader was a bit more interesting. And it was nice to have a 'dark' Jedi who wasn't a some omni-competent killing machine and bit of character depth. Don't know whether it was deliberate, but I thought it was interesting that they had a go at keeping you guessing about who was going to be the 'new Jedi'.

The only thing tat really bugged me retrospectively was the relationship between the Republic, the Resistance and the First Order. Surely if the Republic is at war with the First Order then the Resistance is the Republic Army / Fleet?

Plot holes? ALL of the StarWars movies are FULL of plot holes, especially the original!
1. Why are the plans on a single data disc in a single 'droid? What, they can't make COPIES?!?!? It's DATA!!!
2. Why haven't the plans been transmitted across the galaxy to multiple recipients? FTL communication of complex data is clearly possible; the emperor engages in HOLOGRAM communication with Darth Vader, in real time, from a planet tens to hundreds of light years away. If comes can do that, they can easily transmit a stream of simple data. (To be fair, we don't see the holo-transmissions until TESB, but we do know that FTL comm happens between Tatooine and the Death Star, regarding the description of the M. Falcon.)
3. Why do the Rebels have only ONE base? Distributed forces make more sense.
4. A lone droid can apparently control the internal systems of the Death Star from a port in a docking bay.

And I'll stop there, but I could easily go on. This series has never been about tight plotting or sound tactics or scientific possibility. It's about adventure, Good vs. Evil, and Cool Stuff To Look At. On that score, I think number VII works just as well as any of the originals.

Saw it today, its not as good as A New Hope, but maybe it will age well. I enjoyed it enough to see it again, though that may be on DVD.

ROUWetPatchBehindTheSofa28 Dec 2015 12:42 p.m. PST

Oddly, there was one scene, with a dark figure stalking through snow clad trees when I momentarily lost it and thought I was watching Game of Thrones.

I can get that….

@Parzival
FWIW the old WEG RPG background had it that the old Republic's FLT comms systems was knack'd and replaced by the Imperial holonet system, which unsurprisingly only the Imperial military had access too….

Lardie the Great28 Dec 2015 12:49 p.m. PST

Think of the film as the "magic tree" (ESB soundtrack listing, don't blame me!) were Yoda says something like you'll only see what you take in. I saw the midnight showing, but the cinema goofed and started showing the 2d instead of 3d after 30mins stopped the film, re-wone it 5mins and started it again. Now before I was messing with my glasses and when they restarted it I was thinking I was going to have to complain and was distracted for the rest of the film. After that viewing I was left unimpressed, things didn't make sense, plotholes etc. However I had booked to see it with the family at a Imax screen and it was like seeing a completely different film! and things make more sense, some plotholes could be seen as subtleties Kylo's force sense seems to come and go, but maybe he's being tricksy. One other thing people have critised his fighting abilities but they're ignoring he got hit in the stomach with a bowcaster before the duel. Hope these don't count as spoilers, the editors can delete whatever they want.

Goonfighter28 Dec 2015 2:12 p.m. PST

Capt Gideon – if you enjoyed the prequels then I'm glad for you as it would be pretty damn boring if we all felt the same way.

I think there are several schools of thought re Star Wars, one can be summed up by a guy at the showing I went to who said it was all wrong – a "good" lightsabre is green, not blue. Another is how I saw it which was "mmm, odd, not green, ah well perhaps it's because they've not aligned themselves or matured as a Jedi or something, isn't this all great fun?". And another is "hey that exploded! Blasters! Cool!"

It reminds me of the rule for wookie players in the RPG – they have a friend who is presumed to translate for them, and while their friend is present they can talk freely. If their friend is out of it, they HAVE to talk in wookie noises and hope they are understood. Just pure fun. If you can take that sense of joy, fun and adventure away from any of the films, job done.

I did like the fact that Chewbacca actually got a couple of funny one-liners…. :-)

jtkimmel28 Dec 2015 9:33 p.m. PST

I saw it today and thought it was great.

Risaldar Singh28 Dec 2015 11:29 p.m. PST

Saw it with my 11 year old a few days ago and I'd say his opinion is the Disney was aiming for: "yeah, it's good. It's just like Star Wars but modern, you know".

Once you get over the nostalgia factor, Star Wars was not much better whether it's the plot or the acting…

gounour29 Dec 2015 12:22 a.m. PST

saw it yesterday (no love for crowds), was expectant for the Villain that I had heard descripted as "a nature child of Gollum and Voldemor", which is quite the case.

* Spoiler Alert*
not so disapointed than episodes I to III, missing several points in the "Space-opera scheme". HF and Carry Fisher trying to do their best out of bad storyline; at least first trilogy had some gizmos that COULD be scientifically explained with very advanced tech, but this BIG GUN is hillarious…
Also Shiny Girl to me was just a cylon from original Galactica that got gutted and reused

Fun part: Do you know why the Bad Guy in SW always turn up with almost the same Superweapon (only ever bigger ones)? well, the Headman is always killed at the end, but the engineers and technicians do not change! So when you have a good concept that works, sticks to it…;)

@gounour: laugh
(SEMI SPOILER POSSIBLE BELOW)

"It's time for our R&D progress report. Colonel Magwat, what do your lads have for us?"
"We've got a weapon that will change the course of the war and eliminate the Rebel threat."
"Glad to hear it. Give us a rundown."
"We've designed a big base that can destroy planets!"
"…"
"Well, sir?"
"Didn't we do this before? Twice?"
"Those were space stations. This is a base. Completely different."
"Different, how?"
"It's bigger!"
"As I recall, the second one was also bigger."
"Not as big as this one. And bigger is always better!"
"Anything else? Anyone?"
"…"
"Alright, I'll sign off. But I'd better not hear any complaints."
"We never received any on the last two, sir!"
"…"
evil grin

Goonfighter29 Dec 2015 3:47 p.m. PST

Yes, but those huge bases are completely safe because the plans are never going to…..fall into the………wrong…..hands…….but if they do, the actual weak point is so securely defended that the odds of a cataclysmic strike are negligible. That's what the Bothans in security say so it must be true

Ghostrunner29 Dec 2015 5:23 p.m. PST

Bothans?

Who hired the Bothans?

Well, I'm sure it'll be OK… just keep yelling at them until they fall in line.

Old Contemptibles29 Dec 2015 9:09 p.m. PST

I just posted my reaction on a new thread before I saw this one. My Wife and I saw it tonight. I was very worried about this movie after J.J. Abrams destroyed the Star Trek franchise.

It was basically a rehash of "Star Wars: Episode IV, A New Hope (the first "Star Wars" movie) with the now trendy "Hunger Games" formula thrown in. It was okay but nothing like the first movie. The main characters are a bunch of teenagers. "Hunger Games."

The only character I cared about besides the original cast, was the guy who played the hot shot fighter pilot. I don't remember the character's name but he should have been the star hero of the movie. Not some teenage girl.

In 1977 it was at my local theater for six weeks with long lines everyday. I saw it five times. Watched it every time it was on TV. This new one, not so much. No desire to see it again. I guess it could have been worse, like the Star Trek debacle. If you saw the original Star Wars, then save your money.

Ridley and Boyega are both a couple of years older than Carrie Fisher was when Star Wars came out….

Lardie the Great30 Dec 2015 12:09 p.m. PST

I thought the new characters were at least the same age as Luke & Leia, so not sure where you're going with the "hunger games" but I'd like to see Poe Dameron (hotshot pilot)more in the future. I've seen it twice already, with plans to take the whole family again in the next week.

Ghostrunner30 Dec 2015 12:35 p.m. PST

Sounds like a lot of sour grapes in a way:

1977: I want to be Luke Skywalker when I grow up!

2015: I wish all these Jedi kids would grow the heck up!!!

Sargonarhes01 Jan 2016 3:37 p.m. PST

No still have not seen it, and likely never will. But I think I now realize what it is I am disliking about movies recently. But here people.[URL=http://smg.photobucket.com/user/arhes/media/1915280_10208789789845704_8193106308012649909_n_zpsenmkrxyb.jpg.html]

Ram Kangaroo02 Jan 2016 7:09 p.m. PST

Disappointed. Just plot rehash after plot rehash of EpIV. Great if you've never experienced the original in theaters, but it's more of a re-boot of the series than a continuation of the story. The new girl did a great job, but she's already the strongest Jedi ever and not even trained. Arch villain is a wimp. What's to look forward to? Vader from his first scene was scary bad ass. Note to the Separatists/Empire/First Order : invest in some internal security!!
