I have never seemed to get Spearhead to work properly solo (I suspect this is a function of the command level rather than a shortcoming in the rules themselves)? Has anyone successfully tackled each base = 1 platoon level games solo and if so, how?

Yeah, I've never been able to figure out games with pre-plotted movement/orders for solo gaming.

Sorry man. But if you do figure it out you need to write a book ;)

I haven't but organize both sides. Decide on one side being the attacker. Come up with at least 3 reasonable plans that are different, more plans is probably better. Write the orders for these plans utilizing this force. Then set up the defending side and at random pick one of your previous plans for the attacker and play them following the orders to the best of your ability. This should make for an interesting game. The victory conditions can be hold out for x turns for defender or turning back the attacker. If the defense fails to hold or is penetrated substantially the attacker wins.

I have never tried SH solo but I suspect a fixed defence with a selection of attack plans drawn randomly would work reasonably well.

Yea, the random idea is a good one, e.g.:

Frontal Attack by all units;
Attack on left flank;
Attack on right flank;
Enveloping attack, etc., etc..

Then, have the other side fight as would be expected by any other units.

Perhaps have some other cards in a pile to draw from, for the occasional surprise move, e.g. flanking maneuver, charge into close assault, withdrawal, withdrawal into well laid ambush for you, etc., etc., just to keep it interesting.

Joe and Bashytubits suggestions have both worked for me. I game GWSH, which is a variant of SH. Until recently, solo games were the norm for me. I also acquired Charles Grants' book on solo gaming too, which has several examples that apply to SH with no problem.

As you need to draw out your maneuver plan for SH, if you created 2-3 options before you laid out the Defense and then choose one randomly.
