"The main Western-backed Arab rebel group in Syria appears on the verge of collapse because of low morale, desertions, and distrust of its leaders by the rank and file, threatening U.S. efforts to put together a ground force capable of defeating the Islamic State and negotiating an end to the Syrian civil war. "After five years of this war the people are just tired … and so are our fighters," said Jaseen Salabeh, a volunteer in the Free Syrian Army, which was formed in September 2011 by defectors from the army of Syrian President Bashar Assad. The Free Syrian Army, or FSA, some of whose members are trained by the Central Intelligence Agency, is the biggest and most secular of the scores of rebel groups fighting the Assad government. Although defeating the Islamic State is the focus of Western attention, the U.S. believes there can be no lasting peace in Syria, and no elimination of the Islamic State there, as long as Assad remains in power…" link Main page link Amicalement Armand |

There are still some in the fight? Last I heard, months ago (Summer, I think, but perhaps in the Spring) most had left, been killed, kidnapped, or forced to give their weapons to AQ and ISIS. We had about 4 of them on our side, officially, for $43 USD – $400 USD – $500 USD million, depending upon which figures you want to believe, before they went missing, or defected. |

I guess … there was no surprise here. The only effective fighters in the entire region appears to be the Kurds … and Daesh of course … |

The "moderate" Free Syrian Army, comprising of disaffected and marginalized Arab officers and NCO's from the Syrian Army, reached a high point in late 2011/early 2012 when it had Assad "on the ropes" by all accounts. Four years later, it is a mere shadow of its former self. Most of its members have probably joined more successful and extremist groups like Daesh or Jabhat al-Nusra I reckon. |

Is this really a concern, given their performance thus far? Will anyone notice? |

Is this really a concern, given their performance thus far? Will anyone notice? ------------------- well the UK govt's rationale for committing air assets was the existance of 70,000 anti ISIL moderate fighters in Syria |

These guys have been on the ropes for a long time. What importance they had in the fight disappeared when factionalism broke up the rebellion against Assad. |
