Just making the new clubmen for the Regiment of Foote ECW rules. Kev suggested these. I think the primary source would be the Cerne Abbas man. though the hands are proabably too small the rest seems good?

If they are based on the Cerne Abbas Man then the paint job should be nice and quick :) :)

sjwalker3815 Dec 2015 4:24 a.m. PST

Base them on Kev instead?

Of course you know 'clubmen' were called 'clubmen' because they 'clubbed' together; not because they had whopping big

…… 'clubs'.

Guillaume deGuy15 Dec 2015 8:25 a.m. PST

Although a few maybe carried a nice hefty cudgel?

Billy Goat Wargaming15 Dec 2015 1:30 p.m. PST

One for my wife to assess on the accuracy I think.

Very useful types joking aside. Pitchfork armed locals will find a place in many a scenario.

martin goddard Sponsoring Member of TMP15 Dec 2015 2:10 p.m. PST

So the hands are the right size then?

Elenderil16 Dec 2015 10:28 a.m. PST

In some cases it could be because they were poorly armed. The primary sources for Lancashire mention both sides fielding clubmen. These appear to have been units who ranked beneath militia units but were instructed to appear at a muster point rather like a feudal levy. Those raised by the Earl of Derby were of very poor morale, poorly equipped and prone to looting.

Billyfish makes a good point, which is not often appreciated though I'm confident Pete knows it – I'm planning to mix them with assorted scruffy musket armed types and have them painted in civilian garb, for maximum versatility.

SJ – et.al. I think the way you are describing them has the sense of it.
Most of you guys operate in 25mm (more than 10mm) AND your painting standards are way better than mine but here are a couple pics:

And

I am trying to cover more than the first ECW so these guys are and will be used more broadly – like some of Monmouth's guys (which is how they were listed by Pendraken)

Please pay no attention to the various values assigned – they are for the strange little world I inhabit

And a direct answer to Martin's question.
In comparison to -uh- "other anatomy" yes – the hands would seem small!

sjwalker3817 Dec 2015 9:01 a.m. PST

My ECW toys are 15mm (90% Peter Pig, of course) and as for my painting, let's just say that brown wash hides a multitude of sins, which is why Kev is doing the hard work for me on this particular project!

I think you've done a good job on those 10mm figures by the way – I'd be tempted to do a bit more work on the bases maybe, which would make quite a difference.

Well that is sorted out!

thanks chaps

Thanks for the comment Simon. I have gone back and forth on the bases.
All my 25s are flocked and I started that with 10s also but then fell into this toy-like esthetic. My first soldiers (highlanders charging) were from my grandparents in the early fifties and there is something about those green basis that stuck in my head!

sjwalker3817 Dec 2015 3:10 p.m. PST

Guillaume, I know exactly what you mean – my ECW project is very heavily influenced by the first time I played the period, almost 40 years ago, using strip Minifigs and Gush WRG rules. So this time around I'm going for quite stylised terrain and traditional looking troops – lots of floppy hats for the Royalists etc.

The Monmouth campaign is also very tempting, though I think 1745 remains ahead in the stakes at this stage!

Guillaume deGuy17 Dec 2015 8:03 p.m. PST

Speaking of 40 years ago my first ECW were the Minifig 25mm Parlimentarian foot – pikes and muskets all in lobster tail helmet and tassets! Problematic – but too this day they are my all time favorite figures!

Incidentally, being totally new to this forum and unbelievably unconnected to others in the hobby – I don't know who almost anybody is – like Kev for instance – an awful lot simply goes over my head!

If your doing the '45 somewhere on the web I love to see it.

As you may have gathered, Martin is the highly talented sculptor/owner of Peter Pig Miniatures, and the equally talented painter Kevin Lowth is better known as 'Fat Wally', whose website is a 'must-visit' for inspiration:

fat-wally.com

1745 remains a 'maybe' project: bought a couple of books, and the excellent Old Glory guides, no more than that so far but it's competing against several other possibles in 15mm including Anglo-Zulu War and Mexican-American War.

Trouble is, Martin makes none of these, despite my promises to buy ' fazands' of Zulus (and probably 'undreds of highlanders) if he did!

Guillaume deGuy18 Dec 2015 9:05 a.m. PST

Thanks SJ!

It's like sorting out a jigsaw puzzle – so a few more pieces fitted together.

sjwalker3818 Dec 2015 11:55 a.m. PST

That's a great looking site you've got there – I'll be watching your project with interest and it might just inspire me to get started with my own blog over the holiday.

Guillaume deGuy18 Dec 2015 12:52 p.m. PST

Thanks again Simon! And for the blog follow too.
Doing a blog is a wonderful way to focus your mind on projects – I hope you will get yours started soon – I'll be among your first visitors.

Looked at my sources again one quote is that the Earl of Derby ordered all able bodied men to assemble at Preston. These are then described as Clubmen. That doesn't appear to mean men who clubbed together, although it does clearly mean that later in the war in areas like the Welsh borders.

Like much else in the ECW meanings have become mixed up over time.

For a sculpting point of view it doesn't matter either way we are dealing with local's armed with whatever came to hand. Now if you could just do me some in 2mm!!!
