What the subject line says. From Murphy's wife (Gawd bless her!) who supports his spending, to my kids, who are my backup gaming group, how does your family fit into your gaming? |
TMPWargamerabbit | 13 Dec 2015 5:59 p.m. PST |
GF none. War is not her taste. Youngest son plays napoleonic and FOW with occasional WWI game. Eldest son limited FOW only. Thats it…. apart from the normal gaming group of about 12 players. M |

My wife has suggestions for painting and terrain at times. She also gave me a small plastic chicken to adorn my Marengo scenarios. But she doesn't play. I have a nephew who just might be coaxed into playing sometime soon. |

Thanks PunkRabbit….my wife, (Gawd bless her!) supports my spending habits, enables me, fixes me food, works with getting me a game room/house, and enjoys making scenery and terrain…. She plays also, but rarely, She's a "behind the scenes" person…. |
KSmyth | 13 Dec 2015 7:42 p.m. PST |
My oldest son (age 36) has no interest. My youngest son likes role-playing and board games--and is very good at them. Occasionally he'll take an interest in a miniature game. Oddly, his favorite game is when I haul out my 1/600 ACW ships and we play with the old Yaquinto Ironclads rules we cobbled together for miniatures. For some reason he really likes that. |

Almost nil. However, my wife does like Scrabble, and I have convinced her to play Settlers of Catan in the past. The fact that her daughter and her boyfriend like Settlers means that the four of us might give it a shot some day. In all truthfulness, I can't blame her. Gaming just isn't my wife's thing. |

Ex wife played some DnD – all 3 kids played DnD growing up – me being the DM may have had something to do with it – son plays MTG still – all 3 kids would role play if situation availed itself – current wife plays DnD & boardgames & has expressed interest in minis |
Martin Rapier | 13 Dec 2015 11:24 p.m. PST |
None, although my (now grown up) kids like playing Risk. My wife says there are two kinds of men, Those with hobbies and philanderers. She prefers the former to the latter. |

None really. My 9 and 7 year old will play occasionally, do enjoy it, but don't really ask to do so. |
warwell | 14 Dec 2015 3:39 a.m. PST |
My wife loves non-military themed board games (e.g. Ticket to Ride) and we play regularly but my miniature wargames are solo events. |
OldGrenadier at work | 14 Dec 2015 7:48 a.m. PST |
Wife and daughters tolerate my gaming. Son likes to dabble, more for the dad-son time than anything else. |
Old Wolfman | 14 Dec 2015 8:28 a.m. PST |
Wife is quite understanding, and I've explained some of the games to her. Not her cuppa ,but she understands. |
Old Contemptibles | 14 Dec 2015 9:09 a.m. PST |
My wife has both English and History degrees, so he understands the history connection. But she is not a player. She loves it when we have a game at our house. She gets along with all the members of the club. |
ColCampbell | 14 Dec 2015 9:44 a.m. PST |
Son plays and collects/paints figures. Daughters tolerate. Granddaughter is still too young at 18 months, but I have hopes. Wife says it keeps me off the streets and out of the bars. Jim |

My wife has took up wargaming at the same time as me, 45 years ago. She does not like taking part in multi player games, though she did come to Peter Guilders for a weekend game. Since we retired 10 years ago she has been my only opponent. We wargame for an hour or two most days She has also made a mass of scratch built buildings to grace our wargame table. She does the artistic bit, I do the roof tiles and painting. I have never understood why so few wives seem to take part in wargaming. |
Bismarck | 14 Dec 2015 10:25 a.m. PST |
Wife tolerates it, suffers me boring her to death jabbering away after attending a con. Has never objected to my spending(limited anyway) or the time spent(also limited) with the hobby and actually enjoys having me out of the house when I get the rare chance to go game. Son, now grown, used to game with me back in his HS and undergrad days, but now grown with family of his own and doesnt game anymore. |
David Manley | 14 Dec 2015 11:04 a.m. PST |
Laura has played Wings of Glory occasionally (in fact we all played as a family years ago). Other than that, amused tolerance |

SMWBO, DOM, SOM all play various types and styles of game, all three also enjoy the constructive/creative aspect of figures and terrain. Majority of nieces and nephews, and cousins on SWMBO's side game, again with a broad stripe of options. Dad wasn't keen on gaming, but really liked specific games wargames that piqued his interest (WoW was a fave) and other miscellaneous boardgames. Mom lived through Soviet, then Nazi, then Soviet occupation in WWII and has no interest in (any) wargaming, but enjoys board games and is quite a beguiling card sharp. |

Knight of St John | 14 Dec 2015 1:05 p.m. PST |
While doing some painting last Sunday my youngest, she's two, picked up a box of miniatures and used them as a rattle. Does that count as involved ? Michael. |
surdu2005 | 14 Dec 2015 2:34 p.m. PST |
My son played a lot until a weekend gaming experience where the same two guys ganged up on him and trounced him in every game. He players rarely now and won't come to any more minis events unless I am running the game or it is Aerodrome. My daughter can be coerced into coming from time to time. She DOES like to paint terrain bits for me. |
jefritrout | 14 Dec 2015 2:52 p.m. PST |
My wife will paint figures, but mostly for other people. I'm still trying to get her to paint horses for me. Though I've convinced her and my daughter 10 yoa, to try Frostgrave. So we will all be painting up figures after Christmas to start the game. |
jdpintex | 14 Dec 2015 5:38 p.m. PST |
Wife supports my spending as a counterpoint to her spending on purses. Daughter has nary a clue. So all perfect….they stay out of my hair |
Weasel | 14 Dec 2015 11:15 p.m. PST |
My wife plays RPGs, and the occasional board game, card game or mini's game. The kid thinks it's all completely amazing. |
jambo1 | 15 Dec 2015 10:48 a.m. PST |
My missus is very supportive money wise but has no interest in gaming altho she does like to see what i painted. Daughter is a boardgame fan but not wargaming at all. |
AussieAndy | 15 Dec 2015 7:14 p.m. PST |
My family are happy to play board games like Settlers of Cataan, but have no interest in participating in miniatures gaming. My good natured younger son does ask about what I am now painting, but the older son and wife don't even feign any interest. That being said, they leave me to get on with it and my wife does do my flags for me. So, I can't complain. |
COL Scott ret | 16 Dec 2015 3:00 a.m. PST |
Wife barely tolerates, tried to slide her in through a friendly risk game --- but she did not appreciate my taking her territories. Children exhibit differing levels of interest, from Will play any time I pull it out to willing to let dad talk about it. perhaps the random "that looks cool." |

Son has played a few games but the rest think I'm too old to play with toys. |

I'm the only gamer in my family. My sister and my cousin used to play D&D, but they haven't done so in decades. |
Whirlwind | 19 Dec 2015 2:23 a.m. PST |
Mrs W likes boardgames and will play Settlers, LotR Card game, stuff like that. My kids are pretty young but the eldest two love Heroquest and we have played that a lot recently. My brother-in-law loves Star Wars and Formula De, we break those out quite often. And I used to play home-brewed really simple wargames with my recently deceased Grandad (think Wise/Featherstone-type rules that my 11-year old self made up), he quite enjoyed them. |

My wife was always very understanding, but not involved. My daughter loves them as a sort of art form. My son points out that he can build a pair of armies with his x-box in a couple of minutes. I hope my grandchildren will play with me. I bake, so perhaps they will be open to bribes. |
etotheipi | 30 Dec 2015 3:30 p.m. PST |
@Wulfgar – Haven't played a game with confectionary objectives in a while. Maybe this weekend for game day… |
Wulfgar | 01 Jan 2016 4:02 p.m. PST |
I'm a big believer in cookies and scones. Confectionary objectives are a nice idea! Now my son and daughter just need to make the grandchildren. I hope your game goes well, etothepi! |
