Hi all,

I've just written up my thoughts on the new Iron Cross rules after my first solo play through. The post can be found here.
For those of you who can't be bothered to follow the link I like the rules and you spend most of your time thinking about tactics not how the rules work. But they're not without problems which I think have mainly been caused by streamlining the rules too much in places.

Thanks – your two articles have helped a lot (I haven't had the patience to sit through the podcast). I don't normally play WWII, but my son and his friends have started collecting '44 western front figures and I support them all I can. We started with BKC, which they liked but weren't crazy about the level of abstraction, and I recently got them the Battlegroup Overlord book. This sounds like it might also be a good alternative. It's at a scale they like, and evidently has a points system they can lean on.

Thanks for posting Ferb.

It might be worth posing the issues identified here or on the Great Escape Forum so that we could see what the authors answers are.

Cheers

Nick

Have posted on Great Escape Forum but waiting on it being moderated.

Hmm, sounds like experienced gamers can just fix the few issues you found. How long did your solo game take to play?

BobGrognard13 Dec 2015 10:55 p.m. PST

I think the worthy objective of reducing the rules to just 12 pages is probably the issue here. That said, these seem relatively easy to fix but it is inevitably going to lead to a lot of people who want their rules "complete" having a moan. That's a shame as with a bit of common sense simple rules are much easier.

I've been reading my copy with interest. Not played yet.

I know what you mean…. the "podcasts" can be a bit rambling, and maybe need more focus in the editing. Just an opinion.

All my games tend to share a universal mechanic. If the rules don't say how to figure something out, judge the odds and roll a die!

CptKremmen15 Dec 2015 11:59 a.m. PST

Well there are no ranges
there is also no artillery or aircraft
and the constantly activating and reacting command system reminds you of crossfire.

Martin Rapier16 Dec 2015 4:30 a.m. PST

Like 'Fireball Forward', it is an attempt to improve the Crossfire activation system, and retains many CF concepts such as no ranges and fire at anything you can see.

CF are very much a 'marmite' set of rules, and the sorts of criticisms being levelled here at Iron Cross here are every similar.

I'll be ordering a set today:)

War Panda17 Dec 2015 2:04 p.m. PST

I've ordered it too. I'm not a fan of "grey-areas" in rules but these problems sound pretty straight forward

ItinerantHobbyist08 Jan 2016 10:11 p.m. PST

Iron cross on order from Kings Hobbies and Games.

Flyxwire – might be a good use for some of those 25 T-34s I bought from you.

War Panda09 Jan 2016 5:03 a.m. PST

Just arrived and after my first skim over the rules I'm so reminded of my attempts at making house rules for Crossfire to…except these actually look ood ;)

I'll attempt to post an AAR and review too.

FlyXwire10 Jan 2016 7:58 a.m. PST

Todd, lookin' forward to seeing those T-34s in an upcoming AAR!

War Panda, always enjoy your excellent AARs too, and look forward to your thoughts on Iron Cross.
