Another hard drive bit the dust. (On my local system, not the server.)

The local shop couldn't recover my data, so I'm back up and running with a new, fresh and clean hard drive.

Back-ups failed (again!).

I'll try a data recovery service to recover the data – they recommended drivesavers.com

Don't you love it when technology works so well?

Sorry to hear that Bill. You have my sympathy.

Been there done that, several times.

I suspect in a few decades/centuries, there'll be no trace of human record that's been digitized, despite telling us it will be available forever.

Good luck with this one Bill

Yes, best of luck!

Back it up in the cloud

Ya, like that's secure.

You can set up your own cloud storage, without ever touching a commercial storage.

Have two computers, use bittorrentsync, and have it perpetually back up files to each other.

Stinks – no fun trying to replicate everything you cant replace

But the good news is the computer is still your friend…

I can access my current emails, but don't have my old emails restored yet.

I can access all of my PMs.

Ouch. That is a pain. My last hard-drive failure was due to inadequate ventilation and cooling evidently. Do you have adequate ventilation and cooling? Hope it works out and you are back better than ever.

Do you have adequate ventilation and cooling?

That might have been a contributing factor. I fixed a problem that was blocking some of the circulation a few months ago.

Raid NAS, get one.

I hope you get better soon.
