Besides Dogs of War and The Wild Geese can anyone suggest some more, 70s-80s Merc fiction. I have many of the Phoenix Force titles. But perhaps there were some one off obscure authors that I am missing. Fiction only please, I know all about Mike Hoare, Bob Denard, Schram et al. Thanks very much! |

Look for Wilbur Smith – he wrote several. Most of his thrillers are set in Africa but cover several historical eras. The list in this article indicates which are 'modern' (noting that he started writing back in the 1960s) link |

Some about the real ones would be good too, e.g. Mad Mike Hoare, and company. |

Smith's "In The Dark Of The Sun" is set in 1960s Congo where black troops led by mercenaries take a train into rebel territory to rescue civilians trapped there. Not to mention a fortune in diamonds. A good read and a better movie by the same title. Do yourself a favor and read and watch both. |

One of Wilbur Smiths books think it was called something of value was mu favourite book. Based in Kenyan with the Mau Mau about a white and coloured boy who grew up together and then on opposite sides in the conflict. Was made into a black and white movie gee can't recall the key actor but very famous want to say Rock Hudson. |

I think there were a few of Barry Sadler's Casca books that had parts with Modern Mercs Casca 8: Soldier of Fortune (1983): Casca serves as a mercenary based in 1976 Cambodia. Casca 11: The Legionnaire (1984): At the end of World War II, Casca is captured by the French and drafted into the French Foreign Legion. He is eventually sent to French Indochina, where he fights in the Battle of Dien Bien Phu. Casca 12: African Mercenary (1984): In 1977, Casca is sent on a mission to kill an African dictator, but is betrayed by his allies Casca 16: Desert Mercenary (1986): Casca and his friend Gus work as mercenaries during the Algerian War. |

See if you can find "Firepower", by Chris Dempster and Dave Tomkins: two mercenaries who served with the FNLA during the Angolan Civil War. Dempster and Tomkins worked with the then-notorious 'Colonel Callan', an Anglo-Greek ex-para whose military command spiralled into 'Heart of Darkness'-style anarchy, culminating in the mass execution of his own men. It's just horrifying. Classic 1970's trash fiction that fills your brief includes: 'Mercenary' series, by Peter Buck 'Secret Mission' series, by Don Smith 'S-Com' series, by Steve White 'Soldier of Fortune' series, by Peter McCurtin (Edited to add) 'Mercenaries' series, by Jon Hart. Couldn't remember who wrote them – Took a bit of Google-fu to track down the author's name. Venturing into the 1980's: 'Black berets' series, by Mike McRae 'Killsquad' series, by Frank Garrett What's that? Yes, my teenage bookshelf was utterly reprehensible, thankyou. |
